Eagles Open Spring Schedule With Eighth Place Finish at Sea Best Invitational

PONTE VEDRA, Fla. – Led by senior Brandon Pena’s (Clewiston, Fla./Clewiston HS) fifth top 10 finish of the year, the FGCU men’s golf team saved its best round for last at the Sea Best Invitational hosted by Jacksonville University to finish in sole possession of eight place in the competitive 13-team field on the PLAYERS Stadium Course at the TPC at Sawgrass.

Coming into the event ranked No. 100 in the Golfstat Cup, Pena carded a three-round 70(-2)-73-77/220 to take seventh overall in a field that had several ranked players. The top 10 finish was the 13th of Pena’s illustrious career, as he also extended his consecutive counting scores streak to 47.

FGCU entered the day in ninth place, but moved up a slot into eighth after carding its low round of the event at 303. The Eagles’ 308-313-303/924 was just two shots off of sixth place.

No. 37 Florida took home the team title for the second straight year behind medalist T.J. Vogel (73-69-74/216). The Gators were one of just two teams to break 300 twice during the tournament, highlighted by a four-under 284 in Monday’s second round. No. 30 Liberty (899), No. 5 North Florida (902), No. 44 East Carolina (909) and Coastal Carolina (911) rounded out the top five in a field that featured six top 100 teams.

Senior Alex Medinis (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS) moved up seven slots into a tie for 11th on the final day with his even-par 72. Medinis carded a team-high nine birdies en route to his 77-74-72(E)/223. The Fort Myers product turned in 12 pars and three birdies in his final round, and was one of just seven players at even-par or lower on Tuesday.

The third part of the trio that turned in a score all three rounds was freshman Jack Hernandez (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot HS). His second three-over 75 to end the tournament included 15 pars, as he finished with a team-high 34 over the 54-hole event. Hernandez finished in a tie for 28th overall (75-81-75/231).

FGCU will be back in action on Feb. 20-21 when it takes part in the 12th Annual Rice Intercollegiate in Houston, Texas.
