FORT MYERS, Fla. – Fresh off a fall season that ended with four straight team titles, FGCU men’s golf coach Brent Jensen announced the signing of Mathias Boesmans (Belgium/Western Texas College) and Edward Figueroa (Naples, Fla./St. John Neumann HS) to a National Letter of Intent (NLI) during the early signing period.
Boesmans will have two years of eligibility at FGCU after spending two years at Western Texas College, while Naples product Figueroa will enter as a freshman.
"I am very excited to have both Mathias and Edward joining our squad next year. I think they both bring a lot to the table that will help grow our team,” said Jensen. “I was very impressed with how mature both of them were during the recruiting process and how enthusiastic they were about our golf program here. I am thrilled that both players have decided on FGCU for the next step in their golf careers.”
Originally from Belgium, Boesmans turned in a strong fall with a 71.5 stroke average over five tournaments. He was the team’s top finisher in three tournaments (Midland College Invite, Andrews Collegiate AM, Chap Invitational), while shooting in the 70s in all 13 rounds, including six under-par outings. At the Andrews Collegiate AM, Boesmans helped Western Texas College come from 10 strokes back to defeat No. 1 New Mexico Junior College for the team title while tying for medalist honors with a 67(-4)-67(-4)/134(-8).
Figueroa recently picked up a win at the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) 2012 Puerto Rico Junior Open in January held at the Trump International Golf Club with three-round four-under par 212 (72-71-69). His back-to-back birdies to end the tournament sealed the one-stroke victory and earned the Naples native a sponsor’s exemption into the PGA TOUR’S Puerto Rico Open. Figueroa is currently No. 23 in the AJGA Polo rankings.
Over his final two years at St. John Neumann, Figueroa qualified for the Class 1A State Tournament, finishing 15th and 16th overall, respectively.
Currently ranked No. 86 by Golf Week, FGCU is back in action at the 12th Annual Rice Intercollegiate held from Feb. 20-21 at Westwood Golf Club.
