FORT MYERS, Fla. – Just two days removed from taking third at the Rio Pinar Invitational, the FGCU men’s golf team will stay in state for its final tune-up before the Atlantic Sun Championship when it takes part in the FAU Spring Break Championship beginning on Friday, March 23, at The Fountains Country Club in Lake Worth, Fla.
With six top 3 finishes out of nine events this year, FGCU will battle a 17-team field that is nearly half full (8) of squads that rank in Golf Week’s latest top 100 ranking. No. 25 Florida State headlines the tournament, while six teams, including No. 86 FGCU, rank in the 50-100 range.
FGCU will play alongside host FAU and USF, going off the first tee from 9:15 – 9:51 a.m.
The Eagles snapped a streak of 10 consecutive rounds without an under-par team score at UCF, carding three straight rounds in the red to finish a season-low 14-under par. FGCU sports a team average of 294.2 over nine tournaments and will look to push its string of consecutive under-par rounds to four for the first time since joining Division I in 2007-08.
A major factor in FGCU’s season-low team score of 850 at UCF was the play of freshman Jack Hernandez (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot HS), who took home medalist and A-Sun Golfer of the Week honors. Hernandez played the final 36 holes at nine-under par and in the process extended his own streak of even-par or lower rounds to six. The Fort Myers, Fla. product has contributed a score in 23 of 24 rounds played and is second on the team with a 73.3 stroke average.
Seniors Brandon Pena (Clewiston, Fla./Clewiston HS) and Alex Medinis (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS) will each play in their team-best 10th tournament of the year. Pena – ranked No. 110 in the Golfstat Cup – leads the Green and Blue with a 72.4 stroke average and six top 10s. Medinis was FGCU’s top finisher at last year’s FAU Spring Break Championship, tying for second at a five-under 211 over the three rounds. Medinis recorded his first top 10 of the spring at UCF this past weekend and is FGCU’s third player below a 74.0 stroke average (73.7).
Junior Kyle English (Bloomington, Ill./University HS) and redshirt junior Patrick Williams (Toronto, Ontario/Crescent School) round out FGCU’s starting five. English has put up some solid numbers in the spring, contributing a score in eight of nine rounds with a 73.5 stroke average. Williams earned a spot in this week’s starting lineup after finishing 26th at UCF as an individual, finishing three-over par for the three rounds, highlighted by a one-under start through 36 holes. Redshirt junior Jeremy Self (Tupelo, Miss./Tupelo HS) will make the trip as an individual.
