Five Eagles in Top 20 on Individual Leaderboard

LAKE WORTH, Fla. – All five FGCU men’s golfers finished at even-par or lower, as the Eagles got off to a solid start to the FAU Spring Break Championship with a one-under 283 on Friday to sit in sole possession of the third place in the 15-team field at The Fountains Country Club.

The Eagles’ under-par team score is their fourth in a row, marking the longest streak of consecutive under-par rounds in the program’s Division I history. FGCU produced three straight under-par rounds in its last outing, carding a 14-under par 850 to finish third at the Rio Pinar Invitational hosted by UCF.

No. 25 Florida State leads the field that includes eight teams in Golf Week’s latest top 100 ranking after firing a four-under 280. Northern Illinois (282) sits two strokes back followed the Eagles three back in third. The trio will be the last to tee off Saturday’s second round, going off the first tee from 10:00-10:36 a.m.

“I’m proud of our consistency today and for battling it out when we weren’t playing our best,” said head coach Brent Jensen. “We need to build off today in tomorrow’s round because this a very good field that can produce low numbers.”

Just like he did at UCF, senior Alex Medinis (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers HS) got off to a fast start with a team-low one-under par 70 to sit in a tie for 10th on the 90-player leaderboard. Medinis tied for team first day lead with 13 pars and had three birdies, carding a 33 on the back nine.

The rest of the FGCU lineup all shot even-par 71, as the Green and Blue along with Florida State were the only two teams to have all five players at even-par or lower. The quartet of senior Brandon Pena (Clewiston, Fla./Clewiston HS), junior Kyle English (Bloomington, Ill./University HS), redshirt junior Patrick Williams (Toronto, Canada/Crescent School) and freshman Jack Hernandez (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) all sit in a tie for 19th overall. Pena equaled Medinis’ team-high 13 pars, while English led in birdies (5), Williams was tops in par 5 scoring (-3) and Hernandez produced a one-under score on the par 3s.
