FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU senior Brandon Pena (Clewiston, Fla./Clewiston HS) sits in a tie for 51st place on the individual leaderboard after the first round of the 2012 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships Athens Region held Monday at the University of Georgia Golf Course.
Playing as the No. 6 individual in the Athens Region, Pena’s three-over par 74 featured nine pars, three birdies and six bogeys. He will be back on the course for the second round on Friday at 10:20 a.m. going off the 10th tee alongside Bart George (74) of Loyola-Maryland and Coastal Carolina’s Sebastian Soderberg (-3 68).
Making the NCAA Championship in the program’s first-year of eligibility, Pena is one of 10 individuals in the Athens Region and one of 45 student-athletes that will compete for an individual National Championship over the six regions. The top five teams from each region will advance to the finals with the individuals from the non-advancing teams also being eligible for individual advancement.
Top-seeded Alabama leads the 13-team Athens Region after a 15-under 269, followed by an impressive 13-under 271 from Atlantic Sun champion North Florida. The Ospreys, who are ranked No. 10 by Golfstat and No. 12 by Golf Week, are led by Kevin Alywin and MJ Maguire, who shot six-under par 65 and five-under 66 to sit in first and second, respectively.
