ATHENS, Ga. – After an opening round 74 on Monday, FGCU senior Brandon Pena (Clewiston, Fla./Clewiston HS) improved by one stroke in Tuesday’s second round of the 2012 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships Athens Region with a two-over 73 on Friday at the University of Georgia Golf Course.

Deemed the No. 6 seed out of the 10 individuals playing in the Athens Region, Pena’s two round 74-73/147 keeps him a tie for 51st place on the 75-player leaderboard. Over the two rounds, Pena has 21 pars, five birdies and 10 bogeys.

Pena will be back on the course for the final round on Saturday morning at 9:40 a.m. going off the 10th tee alongside Brendan Lemp of Loyola-Maryland and Ole Miss’ Joe David.

Making the NCAA Championship in the program’s first-year of eligibility, Pena is one of 10 individuals in the Athens Region. The top five teams from each region will advance to the finals with the individuals from the non-advancing teams also being eligible for individual advancement. Only one individual from each of the six regions will advance. Currently, Long Beach State’s Phillip Chian leads the individuals with a 71-68(-3)/139(-3) due to LBSU sitting outside the top five in the team standings.

Top-seeded Alabama leads the 13-team Athens Region by 12 strokes thanks to a 15-under 269 in the first round and an eight-under 276 on Tuesday. The Tide are 12 strokes up on East Carolina (276-281/557) and 17 clear Atlantic Sun champ North Florida, who sits in third place. The Ospreys are in good shape to advance, sitting 15 strokes clear of the sixth place team.
