English, Figueroa Qualify for 112th U.S. Amateur Championship
FORT MYERS, Fla. - FGCU men’s golf senior-to-be Kyle English (Bloomington, Ill./University HS) and incoming freshman Edward Figueroa (Naples, Fla./St. John Neumann HS) will represent the Green and Blue in the 112th U.S. Amateur Championship in two weeks, as the duo each won their respective qualifier to earn a spot in the field.
The U.S. Amateur appearance will be the third for English, as play commences on August 13 at Cherry Hills Country Club. The Championship begins with a 36-hole stroke play qualifier and moves on to match play to determine the winner.
English, who earned A-Sun All-Tournament status at the conference championship in April, was able to claim one of the qualifying spots out of Crestwicke Country Club in his hometown of Bloomington, Ill. on Thursday, July 26, with two-round six-under par 67(-5)-71(-1)/138 to tie for first place. Figueroa won the qualifier held at Wyndemere Country Club in Naples thanks in part to a three-under 69 in the final round on Tuesday. Figueroa carded a 73 in the first round and was in a tie for 11th heading into the final 18 holes.
English qualified for the U.S. Amateur in 2007 and 2008, prior to coming to FGCU. In 2011-12, English turned in a breakout junior season that concluded with a fifth-place showing at the 2012 A-Sun Championships where he shot a three-day 73-74-69(-3)/216(E). English finished the year with a 74.1 stroke average over 30 rounds at 10 tournaments that resulted in a trio of top 5 finishes and a total of five top 20s.
The week prior to the U.S. Amateur qualifier at Crestwicke CC, English tied for 20th at the 63rd Illinois Open Championship presented by Wilson Staff that was held July 16-18 at The Glen Club. English shot a three-round one-under par 215 (71-72-72) to finish in a four-way tie for 20th place. Last summer, English used a three-day run of upsets as the No. 14 seed to capture the prestigious 92nd Chicago District Golf Association (CDGA) Amateur Championships held at Medinah Country Club.
No stranger to big time tournaments, Figueroa won the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) 2012 Puerto Rico Junior Open in January held at the Trump International Golf Club with three-round four-under par 212 (72-71-69). His back-to-back birdies to end the tournament sealed the one-stroke victory and earned the Naples native a sponsor’s exemption into the PGA TOUR’S Puerto Rico Open.
