BURLINGTON, Iowa – Led by freshmen Edward Figueroa (Naples, Fla./St. John Neumann) and Jake Sherwin (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) who were making their collegiate debuts, the FGCU men’s golf team completed its first round of the 2012 Fall season in a tie for 10th place at the Golfweek Conference Challenge at Spirit Hollow Golf Course hosted by Iowa.
In a 15-team field that includes 13 teams ranked in the June 2012 GolfWeek top 100 and six programs that participated in the 2012 NCAA Tournament, FGCU sits in a four-way tie for 10th place with a team score of 306. Missouri tops the leaderboard and is the only team under-par at 286.
Figueroa was one of just eight players in the field of 75 to break par and sits in a tie for fifth after a two-under par 70 in his FGCU debut. Teeing off on No. 10, Figueroa played his first eight holes at one-over, but carded a 34 on his final nine holes thanks to a run of four birdies in five holes. The nearby Naples product had a team-high five birdies and is second in the field in par 3 scoring (-3).
Like Figueroa, Sherwin played nothing like a freshman in his first collegiate round, bouncing back from three bogeys in his first four holes to shoot a solid two-over par 74. Sherwin played his final 14 holes at one-under par, highlighted by an even-par 36 on the course’s front nine.
The team’s other two counting scores were both 81s, as junior Mathias Boesmans (Belgium/Western Texas College) made it three newcomers on the scorecard for the Eagles. Sophomore Jack Hernandez (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) also turned in an 81 despite being one-under after his opening nine holes. Boesmans led the team with 11 pars on the day.
FGCU will tee off Monday’s second round from 9:50-10:30 a.m., going off No. 10 alongside San Jose State and Kansas. Live stats of Monday’s second round and Tuesday’s final round can be found on www.GOLFSTAT.com or www.FGCUATHLETICS.com. Twitter updates are also available @FGCUEagles.
