SEASIDE, Calif. – FGCU men’s golf newcomers Edward Figueroa (Naples, Fla./St. John Neumann) and Mathias Boesmans (Belgium/Western Texas College) continued the strong start to their first seasons in the green and blue on Tuesday, as the Eagles wrapped up play at the St. Mary’s Invitational being held at Bayonet and Blackhorse Golf Courses.

Figueroa, a freshman from nearby Naples, finished as FGCU’s low man for the second straight tournament to start his career, while Mathias equaled Figueroa’s 28th place finish in the field of 85.

As a team, FGCU (306-315-306/927) equaled its first round score of 306 in Tuesday’s final round to finish in 15th place. Host St. Mary’s (290-285-285/860) used its second straight three-under 285 to take home first place in a 15-team field that included five top 100 programs in the June Golf Week rankings. The Gaels’ Ben Geyer used eight birdies in the final round to shoot a seven-under 65 to jump all the way from 19th place into medalist honors.

Sitting in 10th place after round one, Kentucky (305-282-280/867) played the tournament’s final 36 holes a combined 14-under par and finished second. No. 7 Oregon (296-287-291/874) was 14 strokes off St. Mary’s pace in third, while Fresno State (289-288-301/878) and Santa Clara (301-287-294/882) rounded out the top five.

With no round higher than 76 through his first two tournaments, Figueroa finished with a three round 74-76-73/223. Figueroa and Boesmans are the only two Eagles to turn in a counting score in all six rounds this season. Figueroa’s 73 on Tuesday featured 13 pars as he finished the 54-hole tournament with 35 pars.

Boesmans reached as low as three-under through his first six holes on Tuesday before finishing with a three-over 75. The Belgium native produced a 72(E)-76-75/223 scorecard that yielded an eagle, six birdies and 36 pars. Boesmans played the Bayonet course’s par 5s at a combined three-under par in the first and final rounds.

Senior Jeremy Self (Tupelo, Miss./Tupelo HS) gave the Green and Blue three counting scores at 76 or lower on Tuesday. Self’s final round 76 was his lowest score of the tournament, while the final counting score came from sophomore Jack Hernandez (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot) in the form of an 82.

FGCU will return to the links in five days when it helps co-host the Cobra-PUMA Invitational along with Xavier University at Miromar Lakes Golf Club in Fort Myers, Fla. The tournament will begin on Sunday, Sept. 30 with 36 holes and a shotgun at 9 a.m. Monday’s final round will also begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.
