LAKE WORTH, Fla. – Led by four players with scores of 74 or lower, the FGCU men’s golf team carded the lowest round of the final day of the FAU Spring Break Championship on Sunday with a 288 to tie for second place in the 18-team field at The Fountains Country Club.

One of just two teams in the field to break 290 in two rounds, the Green and Blue’s 288 followed Saturday’s 287 and Friday’s opening 298 for a three-day total of 873. The Eagles made up seven strokes on No. 39 UCF (289-282(-2)-295/866), but finished seven strokes back of the Knights. FGCU made up a 13-stroke deficit over the final two rounds to tie Hartford (285-294-294/873) for second.

Freshman Jake Sherwin (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) was FGCU’s low-man all three rounds, finishing just two strokes out of first place in a three-way tie for third place. The only player in the field of 96 to shoot even-par or lower all three rounds, Sherwin sandwiched a two-under 69 between a pair of even-par 71s to shoot 211. The Fort Myers product carded 42 pars and seven birdies over the weekend, playing the par 5s at four-under.

Junior Matt Cote (Palm Harbor, Fla./Palm Harbor University HS) posted his second straight even-par 71 to finish in sole possession of seventh place. Cote’s pair of 71s came after an opening round 72 that featured 15 pars, as he had five birdies and an eagle in the final two rounds. The 2011 A-Sun Freshman of the Year, Cote played the par 5s at five-under, including the first hole at four-under.

“I’m really proud of Jake and Matt for stepping up and playing solid the whole tournament,” said head coach Brent Jensen. “I’m also extremely proud of the whole team for battling a windy golf course today and having the lowest round of the day and moving up the leaderboard on the toughest day of the tournament due to the wind and pin locations.”

Freshman Edward Figueroa (Naples, Fla./St. John Neumann) finished the three-day tournament with a team-high nine birdies, turning in a counting score all three rounds. Figueroa carded eight of his nine birdies on the course’s front nine where he shot a combined two-under par. Playing in his first tournament since the spring opener in early February due to participating in the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open, Figueroa finished in a tie for 23rd position with a scorecard of 74-73-74/221.

Sophomore Jack Hernandez (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) produced his best round of the weekend on Sunday, posting a one-over 71 to move up 26 spots into a tie for 39th. Hernandez had 26 pars over the final two rounds after just eight in Friday’s opening 18 holes. The Fort Myers product played his final 11 holes of the tournament at one-under, using a 74 and 72, respectively, in the final two rounds to bounce back from an 81.

FGCU will get its final tune up before the Atlantic Sun Championships at the Jim West Intercollegiate hosted by Texas State on April 8-9.
