McKINNEY, Texas – Coming off a second place finish at the FAU Spring Break Championship, the FGCU men’s golf team will get its final tune up before the Atlantic Sun Championships starting on Monday at the Jim West Intercollegiate hosted by Texas State at TPC Craig Ranch.
The Eagles turned in their best performance of the spring season and equaled their season-low with a 54-hole score of 873 last weekend at FAU. FGCU will use the same five-man lineup for the second tournament in a row with juniors Mathias Boesmans (Belgium/Western Texas College) and Matt Cote (Palm Harbor, Fla./Palm Harbor University HS), sophomore Jack Hernandez (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) and freshmen Edward Figueroa (Naples, Fla./St. John Neumann) and Jake Sherwin (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS).
The 11-team field at the Jim West Intercollegiate will take on the par 72, 7,417-yard course starting at 10 a.m. ET on Monday. Live scoring can be found on www.GOLFSTAT.com or www.FGCUATHLETICS.com.
The only Eagle to play in all nine events this year, Sherwin was FGCU’s low-man all three rounds at FAU to finish in third place in the field of 96 and A-Sun Player of the Week honors. Sherwin was the only player in the field to finish even-par or lower all three rounds en route to a season-low 211 (71(E)-69(-2)-71(E)). Sherwin has produced a 74.9 stroke average in the spring with a pair of top 5s.
Cote joined Sherwin in the top 10 last weekend with a seventh place finish at FAU, good for his third top 10 of the year. The 2011 A-Sun Freshman of the Year is second on the team with a 75.0 stroke average, producing three even-par rounds in his last two tournaments. Cote is also second on the team with 56 birdies and has turned in four straight rounds of 72 or lower.
Figueroa missed two tournaments due to playing in the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open, but returned last weekend to increase his consecutive counting scores streak to 21 rounds to start his collegiate career. Currently No. 184 in the Golfstat Cup rankings, Figueroa sports a team-low 73.0 stroke average that is boosted by six under-par rounds. The Naples product has finished in the top 15 in four of seven events.
Hernandez is coming off his best back-to-back rounds of the spring with scores of 74 and 72 to close out the FAU Spring Break Championship, while Boesmans had his streak of 22 straight rounds with a counting score snapped last weekend. Hernandez and Boesmans sport stroke averages of 77.8 and 76.7, respectively.
