McKINNEY, Texas – Freshman Edward Figueroa (Naples, Fla./St. John Neumann) turned in his third top 10 finish of the year to highlight the FGCU men’s golf team’s seventh place showing at the Jim West Intercollegiate hosted by Texas State at TPC Craig Ranch on Tuesday.

Figueroa tied for seventh place individually, as FGCU was one of just two teams in the field of 11 to have all five players shoot in the 70s in all three rounds. The Eagles’ 299-307-296/902 scorecard was just 10 strokes back of second place.

No. 36 Vanderbilt (294-299-292/885) took home top honors, defeating Oral Roberts by seven strokes. Playing as an individual, TCU’s Sarosh Adi shared medalist honors with Northern Illinois’ Bryce Emory as the only players at even-par for the tournament.

Figueroa, who finished six strokes back of Adi and Emory, improved by one stroke each round, culminating with Wednesday’s final round one-over par 73. The Naples product carded 36 pars over his 75-74-73/222 in which he finished in a five-way tie for seventh. Sophomore Jack Hernandez (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) was the team’s low-man in the first and final rounds en route to tying for 16th place. Hernandez produced a team-best 11 birdies to shoot 73-79-72(E)/224. The top 20 finish was the third of the year for Hernandez while the three-round 224 is a spring-low.

The trio of juniors Mathias Boesmans (Belgium/Western Texas College) and Matt Cote (Palm Harbor, Fla./Palm Harbor University HS) along with freshman Jake Sherwin (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) finished in 29th-32nd place. Boesmans produced rounds of 75 in the first and final rounds to tie for 29th overall, excelling on the back nine with a combined score of two-over par that featured 17 pars and four birdies. Cote and Sherwin, who were FGCU’s top two finishers at the FAU Spring Break Championship just over a week ago, tied for 32nd place. Cote shot rounds of 76-78-76, while Sherwin went 77-76-77.

FGCU will now turn its attention to the Atlantic Sun Championships from April 21-23 in Braselton, Ga.
