TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – FGCU men’s golf freshman Edward Figueroa (Naples, Fla./St. John Neumann) will get to stay in-state for his first NCAA Regional appearance, as he opens play in Tallahassee on Thursday at Golden Eagle Golf & Country Club.

The second Eagle in as many years to earn an NCAA Regional bid, Figueroa will begin the first of three rounds (May 16-18) on the par-72, 6,965-yard course at 10 a.m. going off the first tee. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams will advance to the NCAA Championships from May 28 - June 2, at Capital City Club Crabapple Course in Atlanta, Ga.

The Tallahassee Regional is made up of 13 teams and 10 individuals. A total of 50 players will be competing for the one individual spot after the five advancing teams’ players are factored out.

Figueroa was named the A-Sun Freshman of the Year and an All-Conference second team choice following the Conference Championship in which he tied for sixth, good for his fourth top 10 of the year. Figueroa was FGCU’s low-man in six of the nine events he played in this season, including 13 of 27 rounds. He is currently ranked No. 164 in the Golfstat Cup race.

His team-leading 73.2 stroke average features a counting score in all 27 team rounds played, making him just the fifth player in program history with a perfect 100 percent counting score campaign. He has a team-best six top 20s and also leads the Eagles with seven-under par rounds.

In just his third collegiate event in the fall at the Cobra/PUMA Invitational hosted by Xavier, Figueroa etched his name into the FGCU record books with the best 54-hole score in program history. As if an opening round two-under par 70 wasn’t impressive enough, he followed with a six-under 66 in round two and a final round eight-under 64, which equaled the lowest round in FGCU history. Figueroa’s score of 16-under 200 was four strokes better than the program 54-hole record set on a pair of occasions, as he took home medalist honors at the ensuing A-Sun Player of the Week award.

On the same day as the NCAA Selection Show, Figueroa advanced through the local U.S. Open qualifier with a three-under 69, moving on to sectionals to be held on June 3. Figueroa missed two tournaments in the Spring due to playing in the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open in early March.

Figueroa is one of three A-Sun individuals participating in the Tallahassee Regional, while two-time defending A-Sun champ North Florida is the No. 5 seed in the region. Kennesaw State will also represent the A-Sun in the NCAA Championships as the No. 10 seed in the Tempe Regional.
