KENNESAW, Ga. – The FGCU men’s golf team concluded the 54-hole Pinetree Intercollegiate at Pinetree Country Club with a final-round 303 Tuesday, wrapping up the two-day event in 7th place. Sophomore Jake Sherwin shot the Eagles’ low round of the day by shaping an even-par 72 out of the 7,108-yard layout.

Host Kennesaw State won the 12-team tournament with an 872 total as the field boasted eight schools in the top 100 of this week’s GolfWeek rankings, including FGCU at No. 98.

Sherwin (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) started his day on the 10th hole and promptly triple bogeyed the par 4. However, he settled down and immediately got one shot back with a birdie on the par-5 11th before making six straight pars until a bogey on the par-4 18th pushed him back to 3-over through his first nine holes. But his round turned around drastically on the front as he rolled in four birdies over the first five holes to move to -1, but bogeyed the par-5 9th to wrap up his 72. Sherwin tied for 40th overall with a 229 total (77-80-72).

“I was extremely proud of Jake for stepping up and battling back to shoot even par on the day after starting out with a triple on his first hole,” head coach Brent Jensen said.

Freshman Jordan Miller (Bradenton, Fla./Bradenton Christian School) concluded his first collegiate tournament with a 2-over 74, culminating a successful tournament which included the lowest round recorded by any FGCU golfer (71, second round). Unlike Sherwin, Miller got off to a fast start as he birdied holes 10 and 11 before making a bogey on 13 and bouncing back with a birdie on the short par-4 14th. But four bogeys and eight pars over his closing 12 holes moved his round from -2 to +2, finishing tied for 26th with a total of 225 (80-71-74).

He was matched for the three rounds by Jack Hernandez (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot HS), who went about his 225 total in nearly opposite fashion as Miller. After entering the final round tied for 5th overall following a pair of 72s on Monday, Hernandez struggled to an 81 on Tuesday. Hernandez’s lone birdie of the day came on the par-5 16th, and that got him back to even par for the day, but then he played the closing 11 holes at +9.

Edward Figueroa (Naples, Fla./St. John Neumann HS) shot his best round of the week with a 4-over 76 to finish in a tie for 44th overall with a 231 (77-78-76). The sophomore was 7-over through his first 12 holes, but ended on a high note by making four birdies over his final six holes, including a stretch of three in a row on holes 4, 5 and 6.

Freshman Keaton Jones (Kitchener, Ontario/St. Mary’s HS) finished tied with Figueroa after closing out his collegiate debut with an 81 and a three-round total of 231 (76-74-81). Jones carded just one birdie on the day – at the 505-yard 16th.

FGCU returns to action next week in its lone tournament of the fall season held in SWFL. The Eagles will participate in the Cobra-PUMA Invitational hosted by Xavier University but held at Miromar Lakes Golf Club. The 54-hole event will begin with a 9 a.m. shotgun start on Sunday, Oct. 27, as the 13-team field will play 36 holes before concluding with another 9 a.m. shotgun on Monday, Oct. 28.
