BRASELTON, Ga. – The FGCU men’s golf team completed its 2013-14 season Tuesday afternoon by finishing in 10th place after three rounds and three days of competition at the Atlantic Sun Championship at The Legends Course of Chateau Elan.
Mercer claimed its first-ever A-Sun men’s golf title courtesy of a three-day 874 total, including a 293 in the final round to finish six shots clear of second place Kennesaw State. FGCU shot a 311 for the second-straight day, and combined with the 312 it carded in the first round finished with a 934 total, five behind Northern Kentucky.
Blake Biggs (Peoria, Ill./Eastern Florida State College/Peoria Notre Dame HS) led the Eagles for the second round in a row with a 3-over 75 to finish as FGCU’s low man for the tournament at 229 – tied for 22nd overall. Biggs found himself in a tie for 37th following the opening round and moved up to a tie for 27th after a 74 on Monday.
“Today was another difficult day and a disappointing end to the championship for us,” head coach Brent Jensen said. “I’d like to thank Matt (Cote) for all the work he has put in for us over the past four years, but hopefully this experience will help the rest of our guys heading into the offseason and in preparation for next year.”
The lone senior on FGCU’s roster, Cote (Palm Harbor, Fla./Palm Harbor University HS) shot a final-round 78. He opened his round with a birdie on the 10th hole and made the turn to the front at 1-under, but couldn’t maintain the momentum en route to his second-straight +6 round.
Keaton Jones (Kitchener, Ontario/St. Mary’s HS) posted a final-round 80, but the freshman still signed for FGCU’s second-best overall score with a 231 total to finish tied for 27th in his first A-Sun Championship appearance. Sophomore Jake Sherwin (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) finished with a round of 78 Tuesday, while junior Jack Hernandez (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) turned in an 80.
The Legends Course at Chateau Elan, which hosted the A-Sun Championship for the fifth-straight year and sixth time in the last seven seasons, played extremely difficult again, with only two holes playing under par. On Sunday and Monday only one hole each day played under par – the 16th on Sunday and the 14th on Monday – and on Tuesday both those holes played under par. For the three rounds of the tournament, scoring averaged more than four strokes over par, finishing at 76.62 from the 50 competitors.
FGCU concludes its year with two tournament wins in Jensen’s fourth season at the helm of the Green and Blue. The Eagles are expected to return everyone but Cote as FGCU will enter the 2014-15 with one of its deepest lineups in Division-I program history.
