FORT MYERS, Fla. –
Florida Gulf Coast University Men’s Soccer Head Coach Bob Butehorn announce the 2007 Schedule
today. The 2007 Schedule features eight home matches including UNLV in the home opener and instate rival FAU to close the season.
“I am very pleased with the level of competition in our first year,” stated head coach Bob Butehorn. “This is truly a national schedule that exposes us to different styles and challenges. We are looking forward to testing ourselves in 2007.”
The Eagles open the season August 31 in Myrtle Beach, S.C., to face Coastal Carolina and Furman in Coastal Carolina’s season opening tournament. Following that tournament, the Eagles bring UNLV in for the first home soccer match at FGCU.
“Our first two matches are against teams that have been in the top 20 over the last few years,” said Butehorn. “UNLV is a fantastic opponent for our home opener. UNLV is a very recognizable name, they have a good coach and are a very talented team.”
FGCU then will compete in a second tournament hosted by FAU. The Eagles will face Georgia State and Iona in the tournament. The Eagles kick off a four-match homestand beginning with Navy on September 21. In the homestand, the Eagles will open Atlantic Sun play with Campbell on the 27th of September. The team concludes the four-game stretch with Mercer on the 29th.
Three road matches follow that stretch of the schedule, all instate conference rivals. The Eagles go to Stetson (10/7/07), Jacksonville (10/12/07) and UNF (10/14). FGCU concludes the schedule with a road match at Florida International and the season finale against Florida Atlantic on November 11.
“I'm excited to see how we measure up to the rest of the conference,” commented Butehorn. “This schedule will provide an outstanding introduction to college soccer here in Southwest Florida.”
