FGCU Men's Soccer Set to Begin Inaugural Season
Fort Myers, Fla. - The FGCU men's soccer team heads to Myrtle Beach, S.C. this weekend to begin the program's inaugural season at the Coastal Carolina University/Adidas Invitational Aug. 31-Sept. 2 at the Coastal Carolina Soccer Field. Furman University, Saint Joseph’s University and tournament host, Coastal Carolina, join FGCU to round out the invitational field. Friday’s match-ups include Furman vs. SJU at 4:30 p.m. and CCU vs. FGCU at 7 p.m. Sunday’s contests are FGCU vs. Furman at 11:30 a.m. and CCU vs. SJU at 2 p.m.

ABOUT THE INVITATIONAL FIELD: The CCU/adidas Invitation will serve as the regular season opener for all four participating schools. Friday’s contest against FGCU will be the inaugural men’s soccer game in Eagles history. Furman finished the 2006 season 11-7-1 and were voted the preseason favorites to win the Southern Conference championship. Saint Joseph’s returns eight starters from a squad that posted a 2-12-4 season a year ago.
Know Your Opponent: Coastal Carolina
Get to know Coastal Carolina: The Chanticleers are 19-7-1 in season openers dating back to their inaugural 1978 campaign. CCU dropped a 1-0 decision to Oakland University in the 2006 season opener.
Preseason Rankings/Awards: The Chanticleers were selected to finish second in the Big South Conference. The Chanticleers, who received one first-place vote, return nine starters and 15 letterwinners from a team that finished second in the league standings a year ago and look to return to the NCAA Tournament after five consecutive appearances from 2001-05.
Exhibition Results: The Chanticleers knocked off No. 2 Duke University, 2-1, in exhibition action at the CCU Soccer Field, on Aug. 19. Sophomore Oron Levy and freshman Kelly Porter posted goals for Coastal. Redshirt freshman Phillip Latham registered a scoreless second half between the posts, recording five saves. CCU wrapped up its final exhibition contest with a 1-1 tie against Elon University, on Aug. 26, at Rudd Field. Kelly Porter netted the Chanticleers’ lone goal.
Coaching Staff: Head Coach Shaun Docking returns for his 10th season at the helm for the Chants. Docking has led the Chanticleers to a 115-56-13 overall record, a 43-17-2 Big South Conference record, two Big South Regular Season Championships, four BSC Tournament Championships and five consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances from 2001-2005. Paul Leese and Joel Barber each enter their second season as assistant coaches. Luke Ibbetson and Bobby Zimmer make the switch from player to coach after each posted successful seasons on the playing field last season for the Chants. The Chants have posted a 53-14-5 (.771) record at the CCU Soccer Field during Head Coach Shaun Docking’s nine-year tenure at the helm of the program. Last season Coastal posted a 6-1-1 record at home, including a perfect 4-0 slate against league foes.
Know Your Opponent - Furman
Get to know Furman: Furman returns eight starters from last season’s 11-7-1 squad that finished third in the SoCon with a 4-2-1 mark.
Preseason Rankings/Awards: The Furman men's soccer team received five of eight first place votes and was selected as the preseason favorite to grab its 18th Southern Conference championship in voting by the league's coaches. Furman also paced the league with four preseason All-SoCon selections. Senior forward Shea Salinas, junior midfielder Patrick Murray, senior defender Jon Leathers and senior goalkeeper Bryan Amos were named to the 13-member squad. All four Paladins, including 2006 SoCon Player-of-the-Year Jon Leathers, were all-league selections a year ago.
Exhibition Results: Marcus Tracy and Corben Bone combined on two second half goals to lead third-ranked Wake Forest past Furman 2-0 in exhibition men's soccer action on Aug. 20 at Stone Soccer Stadium. Wake Forest finished with a 13-5 edge in shots while Furman held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks. Amos notched three saves in the loss for Furman. In Furman’s final exhibition game of the season on Aug. 24, Chris Davis beat South Carolina goalkeeper Geoff del Forn for his first goal of the preseason at the 78:17 mark to lift the Paladins to a 3-2 victory over the Gamecocks in Columbia, S.C.
