FGCU Men's Soccer's High School ID Camp a Success
|
“In only our second year, we have managed to put together a very, very competitive High School ID Camp,” said FGCU head men’s soccer coach Bob Butehorn. “The numbers and the talent allowed us to play some very competitive small and large-sided matches, and I feel we got a very close look at everyone who attended.”
The camp began on Friday night January 2 with a training session and a series of small-sided games. Saturday morning’s session started in the Outdoor Sports Complex’s VIP Room where athletic trainer Chandler Kurtz spoke to the campers and parents about nutrition and injury prevention and care, and assistant coach Alex Aldaz broke down the recruiting process and answered questions for the group. The players then made their way to the field for another training session before taking a break for lunch. The afternoon shooting session allowed the staff to get a clear idea of what each goalkeeper could offer, though each was feeling the fatigue by the end of it all. Saturday night was all about competition, with the teams playing a series of 7v7 games. The final session on Sunday saw a number of spirited full-sided games, ending with a come-from-behind victory in the championship match that had the entire camp cheering or booing.
