Men's Soccer Picks up Two Home Wins
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Florida Gulf Coast University men’s soccer team picked up wins against Stetson and Webber International and fell 1-0 to Notre Dame during Sunday’s exhibition games held at the FGCU Soccer Complex.
The Eagles started the day against an Irish team that made plenty of noise in last fall’s NCAA tournament. Notre Dame started strong and got on the board early, but the FGCU boys got their legs under them as the game went on and the 1-0 score held until the final whistle.
The second game of the day featured the Eagles against the NAIA’s Webber International. FGCU got into a groove and moved the ball well, showing some flair and creating plenty of scoring opportunities. Cristian Raudales scored the game’s only goal, however, when he cleaned up a scramble off of an FGCU corner kick, roofing the rebound into the top of the net.
In the final match, the Eagles took the field against Atlantic Sun rival Stetson, looking to make a statement for this coming fall season, and they continued their confident, attacking-minded play. Late in the first half goalkeeper Adam Glick knocked a clean ball 70 yards over the top to a streaking Jon Hohn. Hohn used his left foot to confidently send a screamer past the Stetson net-minder. A well-organized back four and some hard play in the midfield kept the Hatters from being dangerous and the final score read 1-0.
The Eagles will take the field again at home in the coming weeks. The final dates and times will be announced soon, so stay tuned to www.fgcuathletics.com/msoccer.
