Men's Soccer Concludes Season with Win, Banquet
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The FGCU men’s soccer team finished off the spring season with a 2-1 win over Barry University at home on Saturday, bringing the final spring record to 7-1. The team celebrated the end of an amazing year with a banquet for family and friends on Sunday, during which captains and individual awards were announced.
The game on Saturday started off in the Eagles’ favor as the team created a number of scoring chances. Manny Gonzalez continued his scoring ways when he snuck a free kick past the Barry goalkeeper in the first half to put the Eagles up 1-0. Early in the second half, Barry picked up a goal against the run of play to tie it at 1. The Eagles never wavered, however, and Gonzalez found Scotty Harrison on a corner kick midway through the half, and Harrison buried the goal with his head to give FGCU a 2-1 lead they would never lose.
At Sunday’s Awards Banquet, the team looked back at both the fall and spring seasons and enjoyed a highlight video of the year’s accomplishments. In addition, three awards were handed out. Those award winners are below:
Offensive Player of the Year – Scotty Harrison
Defensive Player of the Year – Jon Koshko
Coaches’ Award – Manny Gonzalez
The program’s first-ever captains were also announced. Rising juniors Arjun Jani, Adam Glick, Jon Koshko and Matt O’Shaughnessy will share the skipper responsibilities for the 2009-10 season.
