Men's Soccer Unveils 2009 Schedule
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The FGCU men's soccer team has announced its schedule for the 2009 regular season.
“The 2009 schedule will be a challenging test for our team," said Head Coach Bob Butehorn. “We’re on the road the majority of season competing against nationally ranked opponents. This should provide a good assessment of the development, character, and maturity of our program. I firmly believe our young team will be well prepared for that challenge.”
FGCU opens the 2009 campaign with a duo of exhibition games. The Eagles will kick things off by hosting Florida Southern on August 18. The Eagles finish exhibition play at home against Eckerd College on August 22.
The Eagles will kick off the 2009 campaign with eight of their first nine regular season contests away from Fort Myers. The Eagles open up the regular season in Miami, Fla. against Florida International on September 1 before hosting their only home game of September against USF on September 5. FGCU will meet USF for the first time in school history. The Bulls of USF finished the season ranked No. 8 in the nation and are fresh off the program’s second ever appearance in the Elite Eight.
FGCU then hits the road for seven consecutive road games. The Eagles start the road trip with a game at FAU (Sept. 7). FGCU then heads to South Carolina to participate in the 2009 Diadora/Spinx Tournament, where they will take on Furman (Sept. 11) and College of Charleston (Sept. 13). College of Charleston went 11-10-0 overall in 2008 and lost to UNC Greensboro, 2-1 in the championship match of the 2008 Southern Conference Men’s Soccer Championships. The Cougars landed three players on the 2008 SoCon All-Tournament Team.
The Eagles then travel to Las Vegas, Nevada to participate in the UNLV Rebel Classic on September 18 and 20. FGCU will face tournament host UC Riverside on September 18 at 7:30 p.m. In the second game of the UNLV Rebel Classic, the Eagles will face UNLV on September 20 at 4:00 p.m. UNLV finished 8-9-1 overall in 2008, claiming the best record for the squad since 2002. The Runnin’ Rebels also placed two on first-team All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation squad and had their first player leave school early to be drafted by the MLS, when sophomore Danny Cruz was selected by the Houston Dynamo as the 41st selection.
The stretch concludes with two Atlantic Sun Conference games in Jacksonville, Fla. against North Florida (Oct. 2) and defending A-Sun Champion Jacksonville University (Oct. 4).
The Eagles then return to Fort Myers to host consecutive home contests. The Eagles host Belmont University on October 9 before welcoming the Bisons of Lipscomb to the FGCU Soccer Complex on October 11.
FGCU then hits the road for a pair of Atlantic Sun Conference matchups against ETSU (October 16) and USC Upstate (October 18).
Two of FGCU’s five conference losses in 2008 came against Mercer and Campbell on the road. Butehorn and the men’s soccer team will have a chance to avenge those losses when the Bears (Oct. 22) and Camels (Oct. 24) come to Fort Myers during the upcoming season.
FGCU’s schedule concludes on November 1 in DeLand, Fla. against Stetson.
