BOCA RATON, Fla. – The FGCU Men’s Soccer team came out on the wrong side of a 1-0 overtime thriller at FAU on Monday night at the FAU Soccer Stadium.

With the loss FGCU moves to 1-2-0 and FAU improves to 1-1-0 on the season.

“It’s a disappointing loss because, once again, we created clear opportunities to score,” said head coach Bob Butehorn following the game. “We just have to have better concentration in the critical, mental moments of the game, especially when playing on the road.”

The Eagles controlled the momentum for the majority of the first half, outshooting the Owls 9-2 heading into intermission.

Multiple scoring chances were generated in the second half by both schools, but neither team was able to find the back of the net by the end of regulation.

The solo goal of the match was scored in 99th minute when FAU Sophomore Darnell King got a ball passed FGCU Junior Matthew Smith (Cape Canaveral, Fla) into the bottom left corner on a rebound shot.

The Eagles recorded 16 shots on the night, with eight shots on goal, and five corner kicks. Smith tallied four saves in goal.

The Owls ended the night with nine shots, with five shots on goal, and eight corners.

The FGCU Men’s Soccer team stays on the road, this time heading to Greenville, S.C. for the Diadora/Spinx Tournament. The Eagles first match is scheduled for Friday, September 11th at 7 p.m against the Furman University Paladins and then against the College of Charleston Cougars on Sunday, September 13th at 12 p.m.
