Eagles Fall in Overtime to College of Charleston
GREENVILLE, S.C. – The FGCU Men’s Soccer came up short in their second consecutive overtime game at the Diadora/Spinx Invitational, this time losing 2-1 to the College of Charleston on Sunday afternoon.
With the loss the Eagles move to 1-3-1 on the year and the College of Charleston advances to 5-0-0 on the season.
"It was a tough overtime loss to a good opponent," said head coach Bob Butehorn following the game. "Our players played well enough to win the game in the second half but didn't finish their chances. I'm proud of their effort in two consecutive overtime road games. We just need to find a way to win."
The first half was played tightly by both teams and the score remained 0-0 heading into the intermission.
The Cougars got on the board shortly after the intermission, taking the lead 1-0 in the 49th minute on a goal by George Khoury.
The Eagles were able to even the game at 1-1 when Freshman Deion Jones (Tampa, Fla.) scored his first collegiate goal by sending a header into the back of the net off of a corner kick from Sophomore Francesco DiStefano (Kissimmee, Fla.).
Neither team was able to find the net again in regulation time and the game went to overtime with score still even at 1-1.
FGCU registered the first shot of the overtime period but it would be the only shot attempt the Eagles would see in the period.
The Cougars were able to net the decisive goal in the 100th minute on a rebound shot at the right post following a free kick save by FGCU goalkeeper Matthew Smith (Cape Canaveral, Fla.).
The Eagles registered eight shots in the match, with four shots on goal, and six corner kicks. Smith recorded six saves in the game.
The Cougars we able to tally 20 shots in the match, with nine shots on goal, and 12 corner kicks.
The FGCU Men’s Soccer team will now head to Las Vegas, Nev. for the UNLV Rebel Classic. The Eagles first match is scheduled for Friday, September 18th at 7:30 p.m. against UC Riverside and then against UNLV on Sunday, September 20th at 4:00 p.m.
