Men's Soccer Student-Athletes Stay Active Over Summer
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The FGCU men’s soccer program currently has six players competing throughout the summer months. Three players are participating in the United Soccer League's Premier Development League (PDL), two student-athletes have been selected to youth club teams, and one other Eagle has been added to the U-20 Canadian National team.
Added to youth club teams in Texas, freshmen Alexei Reyes (Dallas, Texas) and William Morse (Sugar Land, Texas) met each other in the Southern Regional championship game, where Reyes netted the game-winning goal for his Andromeda 91B Navy (TX-N) (SC) to defeat Morse’s 91 Black Rebels (TX-S) (SC) by a score of 1-0, and advance to the 2010 US Youth Soccer National Championships which begin on July 21st.
“We are proud of the student-athletes representing our program and university this summer,” said FGCU head soccer coach Bob Butehorn. “It is through their hard work and dedication during the summer months that we continue to improve and arrive prepared for the pre-season. Their efforts and commitment to the game do not go unnoticed and are exemplary to their peers.”

The USL Premier Development League (commonly known as the PDL) is the amateur league of the United Soccer Leagues in the United States and Canada, forming part of the American Soccer Pyramid. It is currently the top level men's amateur competition in the United States, and has 67 teams competing in four conferences, split into eight regional divisions; unofficially, it is considered to be the fourth tier of competition, behind Major League Soccer, the USSF Division 2 Professional League (comprising the USL First Division and the North American Soccer League) and the USL Second Division, and roughly equal with the National Premier Soccer League and the Pacific Coast Soccer League.

The US Youth Soccer National Championship Series is the country's most prestigious national youth soccer tournament, providing approximately 185,000 players on more than 10,000 teams from US Youth Soccer's 55 State Associations the opportunity to showcase their soccer skills against the best competition in the nation while emphasizing teamwork, discipline and fair play.
Eagles on U-20 National Teams
Jelani Smith (Mississauga, Canada) - U-20 Canadian National Team
Canada is currently preparing for next year’s 2011 CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football) Men’s Under-20 Championship. Next year’s confederation championship will feature 12 teams from North America. The CONCACAF championship will serve as the qualification route for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2011.
