Five Newcomers Join Men's Soccer Class of 2014

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Florida Gulf Coast University men’s soccer team and head coach Bob Butehorn have announced the addition of five student-athletes for the 2010 season. Joining the class of 2014, the newest additions to the Eagle soccer program are Juan Castellon, Donovan Henry, Nick Patterson, Henry Penagos, and Kevin Suarez.

These five individuals join Billy Fanning (Valrico, Fla.), Jake Moffett (Homestead, Fla.), and Ryan Price (Melbourne, Fla.) in representing the graduating class of2014. In addition to the eight newcomers, this year’s rendition of the Eagles return 23 players, including five All-Conference performers from the 2009 club that went 6-3 in the A-Sun and won five of its last seven games.

“Our coaching staff did an outstanding job of identifying these student-athletes,” said FGCU head coach Bob Butehorn, the reigning Atlantic Sun Coach of the Year. “Each player has the character and ambition to be successful in our program and we really look forward to assisting them in reaching their potential as a player and a person.”

Castellon was a four-year varsity player at Royal Palm Beach HS, where he led the team in scoring during his freshman and senior campaigns. His effort during his final season earned the Royal Palm Beach, Fla. native team MVP honors, as well as second team and first team All-County honors from Palm Beach Post and Sun-Sentinel, respectively. Additionally, Castellon won the Champions Club in the Super Y League with Schulz Academy and advanced to the Sweet 16 four times in the State Cup, playing for Palm Beach United.

“Juan is play-making midfielder who has an uncanny feel for the game. His combination of exceptional field vision and accurate passing will provide our team with a valuable offensive threat.”

Henry was a member of the Stoneman Douglas HS varsity team his senior season. The Parkland, Fla. native led Stoneman Douglas to the regional semifinals and was selected as team MVP while earning All-County and All-State first team honors. With the Coral Springs U-19 club, Henry participated in Florida Youth Soccer Association, where the team was crowned U-19 State Cup Champions. Furthermore, Henry competed in the United Soccer Leagues and Super Y-League North American Finals with Schulz Academy, being crowned team MVP and picking up a U-17 Championship. Henry was also a member of the USA U-17 Men’s National Team Residency Program in Bradenton, Fla. for four semesters and competed in international tournaments in Chile and Spain, along with friendly matches against Brazil and Germany. As a freshman, Henry was a member of USA U-15 Youth National Team and competed in an international tournament in Argentina, in addition to participating with the Florida Youth Soccer Association, earning U-16 State Cup Champions with the Kendall Soccer Coalition.

“Donovan’s speed and agility on the flanks make him a dangerous individual attacker. He is a very hard worker with valuable international experience.”

A four-year letterwinner at East Lake HS, Patterson was named to the Pinellas County All-Star second team in junior and senior seasons, while picking up top regular season goal scorer honors in Pinellas County public schools. The Tarpon Springs, Fla. native was selected to the ’92 Florida ODP State Team and '92 Super Y ODP Nat'l Camp in sophomore, junior and senior campaigns. Patterson was also chosen to the national pool of top 30 prospects as a junior.

“Nick’s an exceptional athlete with an outstanding developmental potential. Our staff expects Nick to compete for one of our flank positions this upcoming season.”

Penagos played four seasons at American Heritage School of Delray/Boca, where he competed in the state finals against Tampa Prep as a freshman and helped the varsity squad to finish second in the class 2A State final during sophomore season. The Margate, Fla. native participated in the Florida Youth Soccer Association with South Florida Elite and was crowned U-17 State Cup Champions. During his junior year, Penagos was named to first team Class 2A varsity team with 15 goals and 20 assists and selected as captain for his senior campaign. Picking up first team honors during junior and senior year at American Heritage School, the midfielder finished his senior season with 22 goals and 18 assists. Penagos was also named a starter to the Weston Academy U-18 team and received an invitation to the U-18 US National team camp in Bradenton, Fla. Penagos also played with the Seleccion de Antioquia and was given the opportunity to join the team in Medellin, Colombia.

“Henry is a creative attacking player that will give us numerous formation options. His ability to breakdown teams will be a highly valuable asset to our program.”

Suarez earned his spot as a four-year varsity starter at Cypress Falls HS, where he was a first team All-District selection in junior and senior seasons. The Katy, Texas native was listed on ESPN Rise Soccer’s players to watch in Houston area. Selected to HISD and CFISD All-Tournament teams, Suarez was named a varsity captain for his junior and senior seasons. In his final year, the goalkeeper helped his team to an undefeated season and a district championship.
