NSCAA Picks Men's Soccer Fifth in South Region Rankings
FORT MYERS, Fla. – After opening the 2010 season with back-to-back victories at No. 13 USF and at VCU, the FGCU men’s soccer team earned a spot in the NSCAA South Region rankings on Tuesday morning, snagging the fifth spot on the top 10 poll.
The Eagles’ appearance in the South Region poll is the third in the brief four-year history of the program. In 2008, FGCU was ranked in the South Region over the first two weeks of the season, reaching as high as No. 6.
The only school on the South Region list with a 2-0 record through Sunday, FGCU rounded out the top five behind top-ranked North Carolina (1-1), Duke (1-0-1), Wake Forest (0-1-1) and South Carolina (1-0-0). The Blue and Green are the only non-BCS school in the top five and finished one slot ahead of ACC foe N.C. State (1-1).
The season-opening win at No. 13 USF last Wednesday (Sept. 1) was the program’s first over a ranked opponent as it improved to 3-1 in road openers. The win also snapped USF’s 30-game (26-0-4) home unbeaten streak that had stretched all the way back to September of 2007. Sophomore Deion Jones (Tampa, Fla./Freedom HS) had a hand in both goals in the 2-0 win over of the Bulls, including the game-winning goal.
At VCU on the first day of the Richmond Classic, senior Matt O’Shaughnessy (Trinity, Fla./Mitchell HS) scored the game-winner on a free-kick from 60 yards out that hit the back of the net at the 109:59 mark in the second overtime for a dramatic 2-1 win and the program’s first-ever 2-0 start.
FGCU (2-1) will now prepare for the upcoming set of games at the Marquette Invitational this weekend. The Eagles will open with host Marquette (0-1-1) on Friday, September 10 at 8:05 p.m. and finish the tournament against Valparaiso (2-0-0) on Sunday, September 12 at 3:05 p.m.
