FORT MYERS, Fla. – The No. 25 FGCU men’s soccer team remained unbeaten in A-Sun conference play following a 2-0 victory over USC Upstate on Friday evening at the FGCU Soccer Complex. Sophomore Deion Jones (Tampa, Fla./Freedom HS) recorded the opening goal and assisted junior Cristian Raudales (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee HS) for the second tally of the night.

With the win, FGCU extends its program-record win streak to five games and improves to 7-2-2 on the season, including 3-0 in the A-Sun. The Eagles also extended their home unbeaten streak to eight games (7-0-1) dating back to last season, and are now 6-0-1 in their last seven A-Sun home contests. USC Upstate now stands at 1-6-3 overall and 0-3 in the conference.

"The guys in the back really controlled the game. They played very smart, they managed the game the best we could ask and they limited their chances,” said head coach Bob Butehorn. “I was interested to see how we would play after earning our first-ever national ranking and I was pleased with our effort.”

A foul on Upstate in the 19th minute of play gave Jones a free kick opportunity on the left corner of the 18-yard box. Scoring what would prove to be the decisive tally, the sophomore approached the ball and bent an outstanding shot around the right side of the Spartan defensive wall into the left side of the goal to give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead. It was Jones’ third goal of the 2010 campaign, and his first game-winner since scoring the decisive goal in the 2-1 win over then-No. 13 USF (Sept. 1).

Neither team would touch the back of the net for the remainder of the half and the Eagles headed to the intermission with a 1-0 lead. FGCU held an 8-2 advantage in shots.

The Eagles added an insurance goal when Raudales became the third player to net three goals on the season. Another free kick opportunity was presented to Jones at the 63:05 mark, this time assisting on a ball sent into the box from 30 yards out that found Raudales in front of the net for a well-executed header goal.

Controlling the tempo for the majority of the game, FGCU went on to take the 2-0 victory and stay unblemished in conference play. The Eagles more than doubled the Spartans’ shot total, 15-6, and also took a slim 3-2 advantage in the corner kick count.

With three second half stops, redshirt junior keeper Adam Glick (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley HS) wrapped up the contest with four saves, while McCabe deflected six shots on goal in the match. Glick now has 21 victories and 12 shutouts in his FGCU career.

The No. 25 Eagles will remain at the friendly confines of the FGCU Soccer Complex for a Sunday night showdown with regionally-ranked ETSU at 6:00 p.m. Slotted fourth in the A-Sun preseason poll behind FGCU, the Bucs are also behind the Eagles in the NSCAA South Region rankings at No. 9 in this week’s poll. ETSU bolsters its ranking with a 1-0 victory over BCS foe Clemson and a 2-1 defeat of four-time NCAA tournament participant Bradley. However, the Bucs head into the weekend matchup with the Eagles following a 2-0 loss at Stetson on Friday evening, bringing their record to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
