Men's Soccer Voted Sixth in NSCAA South Region
Monday, October 11, 2010

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Remaining unbeaten in Atlantic Sun competition (4-0) with a pair of conference shutouts over the weekend, the No. 25 FGCU men’s soccer team moved up one spot into sixth place in the NSCAA South Region rankings that were unveiled on Monday afternoon. The Eagles moved past ACC member Wake Forest who previously occupied the sixth slot.

FGCU turned away USC Upstate on Friday, 2-0, and took down last week’s regionally-ranked ETSU, 5-0, on Sunday evening en route to earning a spot on the south region poll for the fourth consecutive week and fifth time this season.

Sitting at 8-2-2 overall and a perfect 4-0 in the A-Sun, the Eagles are currently riding a program-best six-game winning streak. The Blue and Green’s eight wins equals their season total from all of 2009 and stretches their home unbeaten streak to nine games (8-0-1). Last week, FGCU received the first national ranking in program history when Soccer America selected them 25th in the nation, in addition to picking up six votes in the NSCAA National Top 25 poll.

FGCU’s recent three-game shutout streak has also seen the offense come alive, as the Eagles have scored nine goals over the last three contests. Through four A-Sun contests, the Blue and Green have given up just one goal while scoring 11.

North Carolina has topped the South Region rankings in all six polls on the year, followed by South Carolina for the second week in row. Duke remains in the third spot this week, with the College of Charleston and UCF in fourth and fifth place, respectively, ahead of the Eagles. Falling on the road to North Carolina over the weekend, Wake Forest dropped below the Blue and Green in this week’s voting.

The Eagles will be back in action when they close out the road portion of the 2010 schedule. The Blue and Green will begin by heading to Buies Creek, N.C. to face Campbell (4-3-4, 2-1) on Thursday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. FGCU will then head south to Georgia to square off against Mercer (6-3-1, 1-2) on Saturday, Oct. 16 in another 7 p.m. kick-off.
