FGCU No. 21 in Initial Men's Soccer RPI
According to the RPI rankings, FGCU is 2-1-1 against the top-50 and a solid 5-2-2 against the top-100. The Eagles opened the season with a win over then-No. 13 USF who is No. 33 in the RPI, while it picked up a 1-0 shutout victory over then-No. 5 Ohio State (the Buckeyes are currently behind Akron, SMU and North Carolina at No. 4 in the RPI). FGCU’s 21st ranking in the RPI is also bolstered by a 4-1 record on the road, with its lone loss coming to Big East member Marquette, who landed in the top-100 at No. 80.
The Eagles are the lone Atlantic Sun team in the top-50 of the RPI, but are joined in the top-100 by East Tennessee State (No. 51), Stetson (No. 68), Campbell (No. 77), Mercer (No. 78) and Lipscomb (No. 93).
Highlighted by Ohio State and USF, FGCU’s eight-game non-conference slate to this point featured seven teams in the top-100 and VCU who came in at No. 108. The Eagles will play their final non-conference game of the season at home on Tuesday, Oct. 19 against FAU.
The Rating Percentage Index (RPI) is a statistic used to rank a team based upon that team's wins and losses and its strength of schedule. Three factors play into the calculation with the first being the team's Division I winning percentage, accounting for 25-percent of the RPI. The other two criteria are the team's opponents' Division I winning percentage, or the team's schedule strength (50-percent), and the opponents' opponents' Division I winning percentage, or the opponents' strength of schedule (25-percent). The following equation represents the RPI formula, where WP is Winning Percentage, OWP is Opponents' Winning Percentage and OOWP is Opponents' Opponents' Winning Percentage. RPI = (WP * 0.25) + (OWP * 0.50) + (OOWP * 0.25).
It’s been an exciting start to the week for FGCU, who was ranked No. 24 by Soccer America on Tuesday evening after remaining unbeaten in Atlantic Sun competition (4-0) with a pair of conference shutouts last weekend. In addition to the national ranking from Soccer America, FGCU earned recognition from three of the five primary collegiate soccer media outlets (NSCAA, Soccer America, College Soccer News). The Blue and Green were slotted 31st in the NSCAA National Top 25 poll with 20 votes, behind Penn State (58), Michigan (43), San Diego State (25), Portland (25), and Princeton (23), who all were just outside the top-25. FGCU also earned votes in College Soccer News’ Top 30, as they sit just ahead of fellow Atlantic Sun member Stetson at 39th and 40th, respectively.
FGCU’s recent program-best three-game shutout streak has also seen the offense come alive, as the Eagles have scored nine goals over the last three contests. Through four A-Sun contests, the Blue and Green have given up just one goal while scoring 11.
The No. 24 Eagles will be back in action when they close out the road portion of the 2010 schedule with a pair of A-Sun contests. The Blue and Green will begin by heading to Buies Creek, N.C. to face defending champion Campbell (4-3-4, 2-1) on Friday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. FGCU will then head south to Georgia to square off against Mercer (6-3-1, 1-2) on Saturday, Oct. 16 in another 7 p.m. kick-off. The Bears defeated then-No. 29 UAB on the road last week.
