FGCU Slotted No. 20 in Final Regular Season Poll
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The final week of October marked the end of the 2010 campaign for the FGCU men’s soccer team, however it continues to earn weekly recognition from multiple collegiate soccer outlets with the release of their final regular season rankings. The Eagles appear in five national polls for the second straight week, ranking as high as No. 20 in Soccer America’s Top 25 poll.
Although they were inactive on the pitch in recent weeks, the Eagles were still able to garner recognition from five of collegiate soccer’s most noteworthy media outlets. The highest of which had the Blue and Green slotted 20th, as Soccer America placed the Eagles ahead of the likes of Ohio State, South Carolina, Creighton, Duke and Penn State in its top-25 rankings.
In the latest Yahoo! Sports rankings FGCU moved to 25th overall, in addition to receiving 49 votes in the NSCAA poll which slotted the Eagles in the 28th position on the list. Additionally, College Soccer News placed the Blue and Green 26th on its list of the top-30 schools for the second straight week, and Soccer Times awarded FGCU 10 votes, moving them up three spots to 32nd on the outlet’s national rankings.
FGCU finished the season with a 13-3-2 overall record and a perfect 9-0 Atlantic Sun conference mark, becoming just the ninth team in conference history to accomplish the feat. The Eagles are one of six schools in the nation to run the table in conference action and join 10 other programs with unbeaten conference records.
Over the nine-game A-Sun season, FGCU shutout seven of its opponents, outscoring them 26-2 along the way. Dating back to the 2009 season, the Eagles have gone 15-3 over their last 18 A-Sun contests and are currently riding an A-Sun home unbeaten streak of 11 games (10-0-1).
The Blue and Green needed one more point to clinch the regular season championship outright heading into the final pair of A-Sun games. The Eagles outscored their opponents 10-0 in those final two contests, bringing the A-Sun title to Fort Myers for the first time in the brief four-year history of the program.
FGCU is set to return 27 players, including 10 starters and six all-conference performers, next season. As redshirt junior goalkeeper Adam Glick (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley HS) earned Defensive Player of the Year honors, the Eagles also landed four student-athletes on the Atlantic Sun All-Conference first team.
Despite winning the A-Sun regular season, FGCU cannot compete in the conference postseason tournament due to the NCAA reclassifying period. FGCU will be eligible for postseason play in 2011.
“Watching the Atlantic Sun championship game just reemphasized the point that [FGCU] could have been a real threat in the post-season for most teams.” – Yahoo! Sports/Goal.com
