Eagles Ranked No. 34 in Final Men's Soccer RPI
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Leading the strong conference showing in the final men’s soccer RPI rankings of the season, the 2010 Atlantic Sun regular season champion FGCU men’s team finished the year No. 34 among the 204 schools.
According to the RPI rankings, the Blue and Green were 3-1 against the top-50 and a solid 7-2-2 against the top-100. The Eagles opened the season with a win over then-No. 13 USF, who is No. 43 in the RPI, and picked up a 1-0 shutout victory over then-No. 5 Ohio State, who currently holds No. 17. Fellow A-Sun member ETSU came in at No. 38, while FGCU’s lone top-50 loss came at the hands of Old Dominion who sits at No. 29.
The A-Sun fared very well as a conference with a final RPI of 16, which is an eight spot improvement from a season ago and the highest ranking achieved since the A-Sun finished with a final RPI of 15 in 1999. The 10-member soccer league had five schools finish in the top-100 and seven teams in the top-130.
The Rating Percentage Index (RPI) is a statistic used to rank a team based upon that team's wins and losses and its strength of schedule. Three factors play into the calculation with the first being the team's Division I winning percentage, accounting for 25-percent of the RPI. The other two criteria are the team's opponents' Division I winning percentage, or the team's schedule strength (50-percent), and the opponents' opponents' Division I winning percentage, or the opponents' strength of schedule (25-percent). The following equation represents the RPI formula, where WP is Winning Percentage, OWP is Opponents' Winning Percentage and OOWP is Opponents' Opponents' Winning Percentage. RPI = (WP * 0.25) + (OWP * 0.50) + (OOWP * 0.25).
The Eagles have improved in each of their four seasons, culminating with a 13-3-2 record, their first-ever A-Sun regular season title and spending several weeks in the national rankings by several media outlets this season. The win against UNF on Oct. 31 sealed an unbeaten record in A-Sun action for the Blue and Green, marking just the ninth time in conference history a team has accomplished the feat. Dating back to the 2009 season, the Eagles have gone 14-2 over their last 16 A-Sun contests and are currently riding an 11-game A-Sun home unbeaten streak (10-0-1).
Despite winning the A-Sun regular season, FGCU was unable to compete in the conference and NCAA postseason tournaments due to the NCAA reclassifying period. FGCU will be eligible for postseason play in 2011. The Eagles are set to return 27 players, including 10 starters and six all-conference performers, next season.
