A-Sun Champion Men’s Soccer Announces 10-Member Recruiting Class for 2012
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Coming off an historic 2011 season which included an Atlantic Sun regular season and tournament title, as well as the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance, reigning A-Sun Coach of the Year Bob Butehorn and his staff have announced the addition of 10 players for the upcoming fall season.

"This incoming class enters our program with an outstanding soccer pedigree,” said Butehorn. “We believe their playing experience, both nationally and internationally, will have an immediate impact on our program. Our staff did another outstanding job identifying the talent this year and we look forward to working with this group over the next four years."
Familiar with the Southwest Florida area having previously gone to Gateway Charter School, Gooden joins the Eagles after competing for head coach Kevin Versen at Lake Forrest Academy in Chicago, Ill. The Fort Myers, Fla. product was named a top 20 player in the state of Florida, ranking as high as No. 16, and also earned Chicago Tribune second team All-State recognition. Gooden was a member of the Chicago Fire USSDA team and was previously selected to the U.S. U-15 National team.
A left-footed defender from Coronado High School in El Paso, Texas, Guillen joined the FC Dallas Academy this past summer from his affiliate club FC Dallas El Paso and earned the chance to compete with the FC Dallas reserve squad. Following his senior season, the future Eagle earned Defensive MVP honors from the El Paso Times. As part of one of the strongest defensive units in the USSDA, his FC Dallas squad held a 16-1-1 record with 60 goals scored and just six goals allowed with six games remaining in its season.
Continuing the depth added to the defense, Hutchinson joins the Green and Blue on the backline following his efforts at Manatee High School. The Bradenton, Fla. product was a member of the IMG Soccer USDDA team and a former member of the Florida Olympic Development Program (ODP). Hutchinson started in 11 of 13 matches for the IMG Soccer Academy under-18 squad and started in 20 of 23 matches with the under-17/18 team last season.
Attending West Broward High School in Pembroke Pines, Fla., Ricci will also compete on the Eagles defense after spending the spring and summer of 2012 training with Levante U.D. & Villarreal C.F. youth teams in Spain. Ricci was a member of the Weston FC USSDA team, in addition to being selected to the 2010-11 USSDA South Conference Starting XI. According to TopDrawerSoccer.com, the incoming freshman is ranked No. 98 in the top 150, No. 5 in the Florida region, and No. 22 at his position.
Looking to compete in the FGCU midfield, Saravia joins the Green and Blue after competing at Colegio Internacional Montessori in Guatemala City, Guatemala. A member of Antigua GFC, Saravia was also selected to the Guatemala U-17 and U-20 National Teams.
Also joining the Eagles as an international student-athlete, Stanese will further the strength of the FGCU backline after competing at Pitt Meadows Secondary School in Pitts Meadow, British Columbia. Part of the starting 11 for the Vancouver Whitecaps FC USDDA team, Stanese had the opportunity to compete on the Whitecaps reserve team, and was also a member of the Canadian U-17 and U-20 National teams. Stanese made 11 appearances during his first PDL season with Whitecaps FC Residency, as they finished third in the Northwest Division of the PDL’s Western Conference. His biggest athletic accolade came when he was selected as a finalist for the Canadian U-17 Player of the Year.
The fourth in-state addition in the class, Suedois will look to improve the FGCU attack next season playing in the midfield after attending Florida Virtual School. The Miami Shores, Fla. product was a member of the USL PDL Fort Lauderdale Schulz Academy and spent the 2010 season with LASK Linz in Austria.
One of two goalkeepers in the class, George heads to FGCU following his playing career at Countryside High School. During his time at Countryside, the future Eagle earned All-County first team honors in both his junior and senior seasons. The Safety Harbor, Fla. product was named team MVP as a junior, and was also selected as the team captain for his Clearwater Chargers USSDA team. George provided a strong performance in the Class 5A District 8 Championship, helping his team to victory with the game-winning save in penalty kicks.
Also competing for time in the net, Schuler is one of four international student athletes in this year’s recruiting class. The 6-foot-4 goalkeeper previously competed at Instituicao Evangelica de Novo Hamburgo and also played for notable clubs in Brazil, including Sport Club Internacional and Novo Hamburgo.
Playing at Montverde Academy, Vega helped guide his team to the 2010-11 ESPN Rise National Championship. Having competed with Academia F.C. in Guatemala, the incoming freshman was also a member of the Guatemalan National Team in the CONCACAF U-17 Championship, in which he squared off against current FGCU defender Federico Crespo (Heredia, Costa Rica/St. Paul College/Universidad Latina). Recently, Vega was called into training camp for the U-20 Guatemalan National Team.
After successfully defending its A-Sun regular season title with a 7-1 conference mark, the Green and Blue entered the A-Sun Tournament as the league’s No. 1 seed. The Eagles went on to a pair of one-goal victories of fourth-seeded Mercer (2-1) and sixth-seeded tournament host ETSU (1-0) to clinch their first-ever A-Sun Tournament championship and NCAA Tournament berth in the program’s first year of postseason eligibility.
