DeSousa Named to Soccer America All-Freshman Second Team
FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU men’s soccer freshmen Felipe DeSousa (Vila Velha, Brazil/Wharton HS-FL) recently added to his long list of postseason accolades when he was named to the Soccer America All-Freshman second team on January 7th.
The national accolade is the second of the offseason for DeSousa, who was also named to the College Soccer News All-Freshman third team. DeSousa’s national honors stem from him winning the A-Sun Freshman of the Year award and being one of just three freshmen to earn NSCAA All-South region honors in a region that consists of programs from the ACC, Conference USA, Atlantic Sun and Southern Conference (SoCon).
“It's a fantastic honor for Felipe and the program,” said head coach Bob Butehorn, who has guided the Eagles to 58 wins since starting the program in 2007. “We know he's only scraping the surface of his ability and look forward to watching him develop in the years ahead.”
Tabbed as the No. 84 ranked freshman in the nation by TopDrawerSoccer.com following the season, DeSousa was FGCU’s biggest offensive threat in his first season on the pitch, equaling a program single-season record with seven goals while leading the team with 15 points. Highlighting DeSousa’s seven goals over 15 games played, which ranked third in the A-Sun, were a league-leading and program record five game-winners.
The Vila Velha, Brazil native became just the second player in program history to score a goal in three straight games, which all happened to be game-winners against A-Sun foes USC Upstate, North Florida and at Jacksonville. After his two-goal performance at JU, DeSousa was named the A-Sun Player of the Week.
DeSousa also found his way on the A-Sun All-Conference first team and All-Freshmen team. With his overtime game-winner against Lipscomb in the A-Sun semifinals, he was named to the A-Sun All-Tournament team.
FGCU will welcome back its talented 12-member freshmen class along with 10 other returners from this year’s club that finished with a 11-5-3 record, won its third straight A-Sun regular season crown (6-1-1) and advanced to its second consecutive NCAA Tournament via winning the A-Sun Tournament. FGCU is one of just four teams in the nation to win its respective conference postseason tournament the last two years and one of 24 programs to make the NCAA Tournament in the 2011 and 2012.
