Three orange tractors lumbered up and down the vacant lot. Their engines emitted a constant, loud hum as they prepared the ground for the construction of another campus building.

A few yards away, another type of construction was afoot on the school’s recreational field. There were no tractors or hard hats, just two sports clubs commencing what they hope will be long, fruitful journeys.

The Florida Gulf Coast University men’s and women’s soccer teams, which had been nothing but an idea, officially became reality Monday when they practiced for the first time. The programs will play in the Atlantic Sun Conference and kick off their inaugural seasons Friday, Aug. 31, when the men will be play at Coastal Carolina in Conway, S.C., and the women will be at home against Alabama State.

“Today is a big day. A lot of our dreams came true,” said Eagles women’s coach Jim Blankenship, who has been working at the school for more than a year. “We worked hard at this process to get to this point and it’s finally here. That’s a big step. Now, it’s about having the correct foundation.”
