Ben Foerstner scored his 2nd goal of the season in the 4-3 loss to GWU.
Boiling Springs, N.C. - The FGCU men's soccer team wrapped up the Atlantic Sun regular season by dropping a heart-breaking 4-3 decision to Gardner-Webb Sunday afternoon.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (3-13-1, 3-6 A-Sun) got on the board first in the 25th minute of the game when Richard Godfrey scored a goal when he received a pass in traffic and punched the ball past FGCU goalie, Adam Glick (Leola, Pa.). FGCU (7-9-1, 3-5-1 A-Sun) would answer GWU's goal less than 20 seconds later and tie the score at 1-1, when Anthony Forde (Odessa, Fla.) received a through ball and beat the goalie with a shot into the left side of the goal.
In the 37th minute, GWU's Godfrey would strike again by putting away loose ball in front of the keeper. The first period ended with Gardner-Webb taking a 2-1 lead going into halftime. FGCU was outshot 6-3 and won the corner kick battle 3-1 in the first period.
The second period was a shoot-out with each team scoring two goals. FGCU scored the first goal of the second period and tied the game at 2-2 when Ben Foerstner (Tampa, Fla.) received a cross from the right side and buried a shot into the goal. Foerstner's goal was assisted by Trent Anderson (Tampa, Fla.).
In the 78th minute, GWU's Miguel Pinzon capitalized on a penalty kick opportunity and gave the Runnin' Bulldogs the 3-2 lead.
In the 82nd minute, Corey Sheriff (Coral Springs, Fla.) tied the game at 3-3 after Trent Anderson sent a cross into the box and Sheriff put a shot by the keeper. Less than 40 seconds later, the Runnin' Bulldogs would respond when Logan Swain scored on a header to give GWU the lead. Swain's goal would prove to be the game-winner as Gardner-Webb won by the score of 4-3.
GWU's goalkeeper Dane Geraci tallied three saves while Glick notched four stops for FGCU. The Eagles were outshot 13-8 and tied GWU in the corner kick battle 5-5. Ben Foerstner and Anthony Forde led the Eagles in shots (2), while Trent Anderson registered two assists.
The Eagles will be back in action Sunday, Nov. 4 when they host Howard at the FGCU Soccer Complex. The game is slated to begin at 12 p.m.
