Men's Soccer Releases 2008 Schedule
Thursday, March 27, 2008

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The FGCU men's soccer team has announced its schedule for the 2008 regular season.

“I think it is important to play a very strong non-conference schedule," said Head Coach Bob Butehorn. "Going out and playing this level of competition is only going to make us better. In order to become a great team, we have to face great teams on a regular basis if we want to improve."

FGCU will kick off the 2008 season with six consecutive contests away from Fort Myers. The Eagles will battle Eckerd College in a scrimmage on August 17. FGCU will also play an exhibition on August 22, but the opponent and time are to be determined.

The Eagles play their first regular season games of the season when they travel to Columbus, Ohio to participate in the OSU Classic on August 29 and 31. FGCU will face No. 2 Ohio State on Aug. 29 at 7 p.m. Ohio State went 17-4-5 overall in 2007 and set school records for wins, shutouts (15), consecutive shutouts (five), unbeaten streak (15, 12-0-3) and advanced past the NCAA tournament’s ‘Sweet 16’ for the first time, advancing to the national championship game against No. 1 Wake Forest before falling, 2-1. In the second game of the OSU Classic, the Eagles will face Penn State, who was the No. 4 seed in the Big Ten Tournament and has advanced to the NCAA Tournament, on Aug. 31 at 1 p.m.

The stretch concludes with games in Oneonta, N.Y. against Hartwick College (Sept. 5) and Syracuse University (Sept. 7) at the Soccer Hall of Fame.

FGCU then hosts four consecutive home contests. The Eagles open their home schedule at the new FGCU Soccer Complex on Sept. 12 against Seattle University. After hosting Seattle, the Eagles will host the Second Annual Embassy Suites Classic, where they will face Holy Cross (Sept. 19) and Fairfield (Sept. 21). FGCU wraps up the four game homestand with a Sept. 28 meeting with Florida International.

FGCU begins its Atlantic Sun conference schedule with a pair of road match ups against Mercer (Oct. 2) and reigning A-Sun champion Campbell (Oct. 4).

The rest of the Eagles season will be loaded with home games as the Eagles will host six of the last eight games at the FGCU Soccer Complex. FGCU hosts three consecutive A-Sun foes, Stetson (Oct. 11), UNF (Oct. 17) and A-Sun runner-up Jacksonville (Oct. 19), before hitting the road to take on Belmont (Oct. 24) and Lipscomb (Oct. 26).

The Eagles then return home to Fort Myers to wrap up the 2008 season with a stretch of three straight contests, beginning with a game against East Tennessee State University (Oct. 31). FGCU will remain at home to wrap-up A-Sun competition against USC-Upstate (Nov. 2).

FGCU finishes the 2008 regular season with a home game against Florida Atlantic (Nov. 8).
