FORT MYERS, Fla. - The FGCU men’s soccer team defeated Eckerd College on Friday night 2-0 to extend their spring win streak to five games and improve the spring record to 6-1.
The game started a bit slow for both sides, but FGCU managed to keep the game at their own pace, eventually breaking a scoreless tie. Manny Gonzalez struck a banger from 40 yards that surprised the Eckerd goalkeeper and quickly snuck just under the crossbar for the first goal midway through the second half. In the closing minutes of the game, Gonzalez stepped to a free kick from the left flank, and with the Eckerd goalkeeper expecting a cross, Gonzalez whipped a shot inside the near post and extended the lead to 2-0.
The Eagles have posted wins this season against St. Leo, Stetson, Weber International, the Venezuelan U-17 National team, the US U-17 National Team and Eckerd. They will take on Barry on Saturday at the FGCU Soccer Complex in the spring’s final match.
