JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Following a two week break in play, the FGCU men’s soccer team opened up conference play with a 3-0 defeat of North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla. on Friday evening. The Eagles netted one goal in the first half and followed it with two goals in the second half.
With the win, FGCU improves to 3-4-1 on the season and 1-0-0 in A-Sun Conference matches. North Florida moves to 0-8-0 on the year and 0-1-0 in the A-Sun Conference.
The Eagles were able to get on the board in the 36th minute when Sophomore Cristian Raudales (Bradenton, Fla.) scored his third goal of season by sending a shot into the upper left corner of the goal from the top of the box. Sophomore Scott Harrison (Cocoa, Fla.) recorded his first point of the season by assisting Raudales on the goal.
The Eagles were able to hold on to the 1-0 lead heading into the intermission.
The first half was closely contested with the shot total at 5-4 in favor of FGCU.
FGCU would build on the lead in the second half when Sophomore Tyler Sharpe (Merritt Island, Fla.) found the back of the net on a deflection shot in the 71st minute. It was the first goal of the season for Sharpe.
The Eagles would send the score to 3-0 in the 82nd minute, as Sophomore Francesco DiStefano (Kissimmee, Fla.) tallied his first goal of season by putting a free kick past the UNF goal keeper.
The contest would come to a close with FGCU still holding on to the 3-0 lead.
FGCU recorded nine shots, with five shots on goal, and seven corner kicks. FGCU goal keeper Matthew Smith (Cape Canaveral, Fla.) registered five saves in the outing.
UNF was able to record 10 shots, with five shots on goal, and seven corners on the night.
The Eagles will take the field again this weekend, staying in Jacksonville, Fla. for another conference match on Sunday against Jacksonville University. The game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
