JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – After picking up two hard earned A-Sun victories last weekend, the FGCU men’s soccer team was unable to keep the streak alive, falling 3-0 to the Buccaneers of East Tennessee State in Johnson City, Tenn. on Friday afternoon.
With the loss, FGCU moves to 5-6-1 on the year with an Atlantic Sun Conference record of 3-2-0 and East Tennessee State improves to 2-6-3 on the season with a 1-2-1 A-Sun conference record.
ETSU jumped out to the early 1-0 lead, as Sean Hoek received a cross pass from Theo Yang and sent a shot into the back of the net from eight yards out in the 25th minute.
FGCU was unable to answer in the period and headed to the intermission with a 1-0 deficit. The Eagles were outshot 9-2 in the first half.
The Buccaneers would add to their lead in the second half, when Aaron Schoenfeld got a header past FGCU goalkeeper Matthew Smith (Cape Canaveral, Fla) in the 53rd minute on a cross pass from Alesi Osorio.
East Tennessee State would score once more in the 58th minute, sending the game to 3-0 on a goal scored by Alesi Orosio that was knocked in from just outside the 18 yard box.
The Eagles were unable to find the back of the net at the end of regulation and the game came to a close with ETSU on top 3-0. FGCU registered six shots, with one shot on goal, and took six corners. Smith ended the outing with five saves.
East Tennessee State took 20 shots in the match, with eight shots on goal, and four corner kicks.
The FGCU men’s soccer team will stay on the road as they travel to take on the Spartans of USC Upstate in the second A-Sun Conference match of the weekend. The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start on Sunday afternoon.
