FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU men’s and women’s soccer programs received national recognition when the 2009 NSCAA College Team Academic Award Winners were announced. A total of 470 soccer teams (141 men, 329 women) posted a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Of that total, only 97 schools had both their men's and women's programs recognized.
FGCU’s athletic programs place a strong emphasis on academic excellence. The soccer programs’ hard work inside the classroom was acknowledged with the women’s 3.29 and the men’s 3.05 team GPA’s.
Seven different schools from the Atlantic Sun Conference received this award, with Mercer and FGCU earning the award in both men’s and women’s soccer.
Only three conferences, the Big East (10), the Southeastern Conference (nine) and Conference USA (eight) earned more NSCAA Women’s Soccer Academic Team Awards than the Atlantic Sun. The A-Sun also placed more teams on the NSCAA Women’s Soccer Academic Team Awards list than the Big 12, the Pacific 10 and the Atlantic Coast Conference.
On the men’s side, Mercer posted a team GPA of 3.06 and made it all the way to the Atlantic Sun Championship final falling to Stetson. FGCU earned an 8-7-1 overall record and a conference mark of 6-3-0 finishing third in the A-Sun standings. The honor marks the first for FGCU and the second for Mercer, who also picked up the award in 2007.
