FORT MYERS, Fla. – With two goals and one assist over three games in the opening week of the regular season, FGCU men’s soccer sophomore Deion Jones (Tampa, Fla./Freedom HS) has been named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Men’s Team of the Week, announced on Tuesday.
Jones’ five points are a team-best and three more than his total from 2009. The second-year midfielder became the first player in program history to tally a goal in the opening two games of the season and has had a hand in three of the team’s four goals on the season.
A native of Tampa, Fla., Jones enjoyed a big homecoming in front of family and friends during FGCU’s 2-1 win at No. 13 USF last Wednesday. Jones helped get the Eagles on the board with an assist on the first goal and then tallied the eventual game-winning goal in the 60th minute. The win was the program’s first over a ranked opponent and ended the Bulls’ 30-game home unbeaten streak (26-0-4).
This past weekend at the Richmond Classic, Jones made his way onto the All-Tournament team after leading the Blue and Green to a 1-1 record. Jones scored the equalizer in Friday’s game against host VCU, a match the Eagles would go on to win, 2-1, in the final seconds of double overtime.
Jones’ weekly honor comes on the same day FGCU earned a No. 5 ranking in the NSCAA South Region poll. This weekend, the Eagles take their 2-1 record to the Marquette Invitational. FGCU will open the tournament on Friday, Sept. 10 at 8:05 p.m. against the host Golden Eagles.
