Monday, October 04, 2010

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Despite sweeping the A-Sun opening weekend for the first time, the FGCU men’s soccer team slipped to the seventh spot in the NSCAA South Region rankings, announced by the media outlet on Monday. The Eagles headed into the pair of contests over the weekend in the sixth spot in the region.

For the third consecutive week, and fourth time this season, the Blue and Green appear in the South Region poll. After opening the season 2-0, the Eagles were tabbed fifth in the South Region in the first regular season poll, and were slotted seventh following the 1-1 draw with Drexel and the thrilling 1-0 defeat of then-No. 5 Ohio State at the Embassy Suites Kick-Off Classic. FGCU took the sixth spot last week after defeating regionally-ranked FIU, 2-1, at the FGCU Soccer Complex.

Topping the South Region rankings for the fifth straight week is North Carolina. South Carolina moved up to the second spot this week jumping Duke, who now sits in third. The College of Charleston, Wake Forest and UCF round out the teams placed ahead of the Eagles, in respective order.

FGCU swept the opening weekend of A-Sun conference play for the first time in the four-year history of the program with a 2-1 overtime win over Lipscomb on Friday and a 2-0 defeat of Belmont on Sunday, both in Nashville, Tenn.

In the Friday evening contest, freshman Ryan Price (Melbourne Beach, Fla./Melbourne HS) tied the game at one apiece midway through the first half, and junior Josey Portillo (Metairie, La./Grace King HS) claimed the victory with the decisive header goal in the first overtime period. On Saturday, freshman Donovan Henry (Parkland, Fla./Stoneman Douglas HS) and sophomore William Morse (Sugar Land, Texas/Clements HS) each scored their first collegiate goal helping the Eagles to the 2-0 victory and undefeated conference start.

Sitting at 6-2-2, the Eagles turn their attention to a pair of Atlantic Sun conference contests at the FGCU Soccer Complex, hosting USC Upstate on Friday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. and ETSU on Sunday, Oct. 10 at 6 p.m. The Blue and Green are currently riding a seven-game home unbeaten streak (6-0-1) dating back to last season, and are 5-0-1 in their last six A-Sun home contests.
