FORT MYERS, Fla. – Heading a defensive unit that allowed just eight shots on goal through a pair of weekend conference contests and picked up its fourth straight shutout with the win over Campbell, senior defenseman Matthew O’Shaughnessy (Trinity, Fla./Mitchell HS) earned Atlantic Sun Defensive Player of the Week honors, announced by the conference office on Monday.
The No. 24 Eagles have outscored their opponents 23-9 on the year. O’Shaughnessy has helped this year’s squad to six shutouts and a program-best eight-game winning streak, all while remaining unbeaten in A-Sun conference play and earning the first national ranking in the brief four-year history of the program.
As the first four-year player in the program’s history, O’Shaughnessy sits as FGCU’s all-time leader in games played (66), games started (65) and minutes played (5848), while ranking fourth in career points with 15 and tied for second in career goals with seven. Additionally, the senior is second in career game-winning goals with three, one behind junior teammate Cristian Raudales (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee HS).
In their most recent outings, the Blue and Green picked up a pair of A-Sun victories to close out the road portion of the schedule, taking down Campbell, 1-0, in Buies Creek, N.C. on Thursday and Mercer, 3-1, in Macon, Ga. on Saturday.
FGCU (10-2-2, 6-0) sits alone atop the conference standings with 18 points, three points ahead of Stetson, who comes into the FGCU Soccer Complex on Friday evening with a 8-3-1 record and a 5-1 conference mark. Before battling with Stetson, the Eagles conclude the non-conference portion of the schedule with a Tuesday evening matchup with in-state rival FAU (3-6-2, 1-2 MAC), with both contests beginning at 7 p.m.
