No. 24 FGCU Climbs to No. 12 in NCAA Men's Soccer RPI
FORT MYERS, Fla. – On the strength of a pair of A-Sun conference road wins over Campbell, 1-0, and Mercer, 3-1, last week, the No. 24 FGCU men’s soccer team climbed to the 12th position in the latest NCAA RPI Rankings, announced by the governing body on Tuesday. The current ranking is a nine spot improvement from last week’s initial RPI ranking of the year, which had the Eagles No. 21 overall.
According to the RPI rankings, FGCU is 2-1 against the top-50 and a solid 8-2-2 against the top-100. The Eagles opened the season with a win over then-No. 13 USF who is No. 28 in the RPI, while it picked up a 1-0 shutout victory over then-No. 5 Ohio State, who currently holds No. 8 in the RPI. FGCU’s No. 12 ranking in the RPI is also bolstered by a 6-1 record on the road, with its lone loss coming to Big East member Marquette, who landed in the top-100 at No. 82.
The Eagles are the lone Atlantic Sun team in the top-50 of the RPI, but are joined in the top-100 by East Tennessee State (No. 53), Stetson (No. 64), Mercer (No. 65), Lipscomb (No. 76), and Campbell (No. 77).
Highlighted by Ohio State and USF, FGCU’s entire eight-game non-conference slate is featured in the top-100. The Eagles will play their final non-conference game of the season tonight (Tuesday) at the FGCU Soccer Complex when they welcome in-state rival FAU, who came in at No. 115, beginning at 7 p.m.
With its only losses coming at the hands of non-conference competition, FGCU comes into the contest with FAU holding a 10-2-2 overall record and a perfect 6-0 mark in the A-Sun. The Eagles are currently riding a program-best eight-game winning streak, and the 10 wins are two better than the season total from all of 2009. Additionally, the Blue and Green’s current home unbeaten streak sits at nine games (8-0-1).
The Rating Percentage Index (RPI) is a statistic used to rank a team based upon that team's wins and losses and its strength of schedule. Three factors play into the calculation with the first being the team's Division I winning percentage, accounting for 25-percent of the RPI. The other two criteria are the team's opponents' Division I winning percentage, or the team's schedule strength (50-percent), and the opponents' opponents' Division I winning percentage, or the opponents' strength of schedule (25-percent). The following equation represents the RPI formula, where WP is Winning Percentage, OWP is Opponents' Winning Percentage and OOWP is Opponents' Opponents' Winning Percentage. RPI = (WP * 0.25) + (OWP * 0.50) + (OOWP * 0.25).
