FORT MYERS, Fla. – The 2010 Atlantic Sun Conference champion FGCU men’s soccer team has announced another NLI to the 2011 signing class. Federico Crespo-Pauly (Heredia, Costa Rica/Saint Paul College/Universidad Latina) becomes the fifth student-athlete to join the Eagles for the upcoming fall season.
“Federico’s playing pedigree will be a definite asset to our program,” said head coach Bob Butehorn, who will be entering his fifth season at the helm. “He’s a talented left-sided defender with an excellent understanding of the game. Fede is a great addition to our talented incoming class and a great fit for FGCU Soccer.”
As a Costa Rican defender with experience at center and left back, Crespo-Pauly comes to FGCU after competing at the club and national level. A member of the Saprissa youth team, Crespo-Pauly was also crowned the UNCAF champion with his Costa Rican U-17 National team. He also helped his team qualify and compete in the Nigerian U-17 World Cup in 2009.
Additionally, the newcomer has participated in International competitions against Argentina, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Trinidad & Tobago, Mexico, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Canada, New Zealand, Turkey and Burquina Faso.
Crespo-Pauly will join midfielders Tomas Granitto (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay HS) and Yianni Sarris (Mentor, Ohio/St. Ignatius HS), goalkeeper Nathan Ingham (Ontario, Canada/Keswick HS), and forward Xavier Silva (Boca Raton, Fla./North Broward Prep) in representing the incoming recruiting class for the 2011-12 season.
The promising five-member class joins an FGCU team that finished the year ranked No. 20 according to Soccer America. The Eagles wrapped up the 2010 season with a perfect 9-0 record in league play, outscoring their opposition 26-2 and bringing home their first Atlantic Sun Conference regular season championship. FGCU is set to return 24 players from last season’s championship team.
