Freshman Silva to Appear on GolTV Reality Series
FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU men’s soccer incoming freshman Xavier Silva (Boca Raton, Fla./North Broward Prep) will be one of 17 amateur players featured in GolTV’s Soccer Aces, a reality TV series filmed in Madrid, Spain that will begin on Thursday, June 2 at 8 p.m.
A group of 17 amateur hopefuls will go through a grueling six-week training camp and compete for a chance to play preseason for a club in Spain’s prestigious La Liga. The selection process included a series of tryouts held across North and South America, as well as in China and Spain. Those selected from each event then traveled to Madrid, Spain for a final round of casting.
Each episode of Soccer Aces can be seen on GolTV on channel 729 for Comcast subscribers and channel 426 for DirecTV users. The show will air on Thursdays at 8 p.m.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for Xavier,” said FGCU head coach Bob Butehorn. “He’ll get to experience different styles of soccer while training and experiencing the culture of the sport in Spain. It’ll also be a great opportunity for him to prepare for the upcoming season. I’m really excited for him.”
A highly decorated addition to the FGCU club in February signing period, Silva was invited to the U.S. U-18 Men’s National Team training camp in Carson, Calif. in November 2010. Silva is listed nationally as the No. 36 recruit in College Soccer News’ Top 150 Recruits in the Class of 2011. Silva played four seasons with the North Broward varsity squad and finished his career as the school’s all-time leader in goals (77) and assists (45). Ranked No. 8 in the 2011 regional top 20, Silva helped his team to four District 14-3A Championships, as well as, a state runner-up finish. Additionally, the 2011 signee has been selected to the Broward County All-Star first team by both the Miami Herald and Sun Sentinel.
While attending the Soccer Aces training academy, the finalists are trained by leading soccer coaches and live under the public eye with video cameras capturing their every move. The contestants are judged by Francescoli, named one of FIFA’s 100 best soccer players of all time, and fellow soccer legend Zinedine Zidane. The show will also feature special guest judges and coaches each week, including some of the world’s top professional soccer stars.
FGCU wrapped up the 2010 season with a perfect 9-0 record in the Atlantic Sun, outscoring the opposition 26-2 en route to bringing home their first conference regular season championship. FGCU returns 24 players from last year’s club that finished with a 13-3-2 record and a No. 20 ranking from Soccer America
