FORT MYERS, Fla. – Incoming FGCU men’s soccer freshman Xavier Silva (Boca Raton, Fla./North Broward Prep) earned some national honors on Wednesday, as the Weston FC forward was named to the U.S. Soccer U-17/18 Development Academy Starting XI.

Silva, who signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) defending A-Sun regular season champs in February, was also named to the South Conference Starting XI, but was one of three forwards named to the national team. Silva’s Weston FC head coach Marcelo Neveleff was named the Coach of the Year.

A highly decorated addition, Silva was invited to the U.S. U-18 Men’s National Team training camp in Carson, Calif. in November 2010. Silva is listed nationally as the No. 36 recruit in College Soccer News’ Top 150 Recruits-Class of 2011. Silva played four seasons with the North Broward varsity squad and finished his career as the school’s all-time leader in goals (77) and assists (45). Ranked No. 8 in the 2011 regional top 20, Silva has helped his team to four District 14-3A Championships, as well as, a state runner-up finish. Additionally, the 2011 signee has been selected to the Broward County All-Star first team by both the Miami Herald and Sun Sentinel.

“Xavier is promising young attacking talent,” Butehorn said back in February. “He’s a proven goal scorer with an uncanny ability to bring the team forward in attack. We think he’s a great a compliment to our program.”

Silva was one of 17 amateur players featured in GolTV’s Soccer Aces, a reality TV series filmed in Madrid, Spain this summer. The 17 amateurs went through a grueling six-week training camp and competed for a chance to play preseason for a club in Spain’s prestigious La Liga. The selection process included a series of tryouts held across North and South America, as well as in China and Spain.

The Development Academy has honored players and coaches with post-season awards since its inaugural season in 2007-08. Past Players of the Year include FIFA U-20 World Cup veteran Dillon Powers and current Major League Soccer forwards Ruben Luna (FC Dallas) and Soony Saad (Sporting Kansas City).
