No. 14 Men's Soccer Voted First by A-Sun Coaches; Glick Tabbed DPOY
FORT MYERS, Fla. – A day removed from the program’s first ever national preseason ranking by Goal.com , the No. 14 FGCU men’s soccer team received more preseason recognition as it was selected as the favorite to defend its Atlantic Sun regular season crown in 2011, as voted on by the nine league coaches and announced by the conference office on Wednesday.
With five first place votes, the Blue and Green topped the preseason poll with 77 points, one point better than 2010 A-Sun Tournament champion ETSU (76) which received the remaining four first place votes. Entering their first year of postseason eligibility following the four-year reclassification period, the Eagles also received five votes as the 2011 tournament favorites.
“It's nice to have the program and our players recognized by our A-Sun colleagues,” said fifth-year head coach Bob Butehorn. “The A-Sun is a quality soccer conference which all of us at FGCU intend to represent well in the upcoming year.”
Four FGCU student-athletes landed spots on the All-Conference team highlighted by senior goalkeeper Adam Glick (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley HS), who was named the frontrunner to claim Defensive Player of the Year honors. This year marked the first time the A-Sun has presented a preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
Also a unanimous selection to the preseason All-Conference team, Glick allowed just two goals in A-Sun play, one of which came on a penalty kick, while leading the league in goals allowed (11), goals against average (0.62), save percentage (.853), shutouts (8), shutouts per game (0.47) and ranked second in saves (64) during the 2010 season. The netminder’s on-field resume landed him the A-Sun Defensive Player of the Year award as well as a first team All-Conference selection.
Junior defenseman Deion Jones (Tampa, Fla./Freedom HS) joined Glick as two of the league’s four unanimous selections on the squad, while senior midfielder Josey Portillo (Metairie, La./Grace King HS) and sophomore forward Ryan Price (Melbourne Beach, Fla./Melbourne HS) rounded out the quartet of FGCU players named to the team.
Following a stellar sophomore campaign, Jones was honored with a first team All-Conference selection and a second team nod to the NSCAA All-South Region team in 2010. Jones led the Eagles with 17 points off seven goals, good for second in the A-Sun, including three game-winners while adding three assists. Furthermore, the free-kick specialist was twice named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com team of the week and once by College Soccer News, in addition to an A-Sun Player of the Week award.
A first team selection to both the All-Conference and NSCAA All-South Region teams, Portillo finished second on team with 12 points off of four goals and four assists, with three goals and four assists in A-Sun play. Known for his elusiveness and ball handling skills, Portillo netted two game-winning goals on the year and contributed greatly to the offensive attack that held a 24-goal (35-11) advantage over its competition in the 2010 campaign.
Unanimously selected to the All-Freshmen team in 2010, Price had a breakout rookie season in which he finished second on the team with 12 points off six goals, including two game-winners. Price netted his first two collegiate goals against nationally-ranked opponents, picking up a goal in the 2-1 season-opening road victory over then-No. 13 USF and followed with the decisive tally in the 1-0 home shutout against then-No. 5 Ohio State. Additionally, the newcomer received an honorable mention in Goal.com’s postseason awards.
Finishing the season with a 13-3-2 record, the Eagles finished the 2010 season ranked No. 20 nationally. The Blue and Green are set to return 20 players from last year, including six All-Conference performers, when they open the 2011 campaign with an exhibition match against Florida Southern on Aug. 17 at the FGCU Soccer Complex at 7 p.m. The 2011 home opener is scheduled for Aug. 26 at 7 p.m. with in-state rival FAU.
