FORT MYERS, Fla. – Providing the eventual game-winner in the opening minutes of the second half on Saturday at No. 8 UCF, junior midfielder Andres Navas (Miami, Fla./Sunset Senior HS/FIU) earned Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week honors, announced by the league office on Monday.
Picking up the A-Sun weekly honor for the first time, Navas helped the Eagles to a 2-1 road victory over No. 8 UCF last weekend. The junior midfielder sent home the game-winner on a well-played cross from senior midfielder Francesco DiStefano (Kissimmee, Fla./Osceola HS) in the 49th minute of play.
The win marked the second time in program history that the Green and Blue have beaten a top 10 opponent, and improved the Eagles’ mark to 3-2 all-time against opponents ranked in the top 25.
Holding an assist and a team-high two goals through the opening seven contests, Navas also sits in a share for the team lead with five points.
The Eagles (3-2-2) are preparing for the A-Sun opener at Stetson on Friday, Sept. 30, in DeLand, Fla. beginning at 7 p.m. The Hatters enter the contest holding a 3-4-1 record, having defeated then-No. 15 Penn State, 3-2.
