FORT MYERS, Fla. – Fresh off winning its first-ever Atlantic Sun Championship in the 89th minute of Sunday’s final, the FGCU men’s soccer team invites all fans to join it at Naples Flatbread in the Miromar Outlets on Monday at 4 p.m. for an NCAA Selection Show party. The NCAA will announce its 48-team field for the 2011 Tournament on NCAA.com beginning at 4:30 p.m.
Postseason eligible for the first time this season, FGCU (12-5-2) entered the A-Sun Tournament as the No. 1 seed after winning the regular season and went on to a pair of one-goal victories against fourth-seeded Mercer (2-1) and sixth-seeded ETSU (1-0) to earn the league’s automatic NCAA berth in just the fifth year of the program.
The Eagles will enter the NCAA Tournament having won six of their last seven games thanks to senior Scott Harrison’s (Cocoa, Fla./Merritt Island HS) goal at the 88:40 mark in the championship match against reigning A-Sun Tournament winner and host ETSU.
“This is a very proud moment for the team, our staff and our program,” said A-Sun Coach of the Year Bob Butehorn, following Sunday’s win in the championship. “Despite all the adversity we have faced, we felt that if we took the regular season and the tournament one game at a time we had a good enough team to win both. This is an historic moment in FGCU men’s soccer history, and we are excited to move on to the NCAA Tournament.”
FGCU’s win marked the first time since 2004 that the No. 1 seed has won the A-Sun Men’s Soccer Tournament. Just a week ago, the women’s program won the A-Sun Tournament title as the No. 1 seed, marking just the fourth time in A-Sun history both a men’s and women’s team from the same school have won the postseason tournament.
